This volume on functional endocrinology addresses four main issues: firstly, the extent to which the hormones considered really do change with age, especially in humans; secondly, the physiological significance of these changes; thirdly, what causes these changes and, finally, the prospects for treatment. Particular emphasis is given to the role of endocrine therapy in the elderly. The text also includes reviews on cytokines, the sympathetic nervous system, and leptin.
