Since present-day medicine rests so largely upon laboratory data, today's students find difficulty in imagining any other form of practice. Only the historical approach can place these "tests" into the correct perspective. The methods used by the physician to diagnose disease have varied greatly over the years, and, as Keele states, represent "logical application of contemporary knowledge," depending on contemporary science. The history of medicine and the history of science are closely intertwined. (Back cover of book. Abridged)
