Pethidin (nazývaný také meperidin) patří mezi opioidní analgetika. Je to syntetický opioidní agonista, který kromě silného analgetického účinku působí mimo jiné také anticholinergně a má lokálně anestetické účinky. Pethidin je indikován k léčbě silné akutní bolesti po těžkých úrazech, operacích a k léčbě chronické bolesti při maligních tumorech. Nejčastěji je aplikován intramuskulárně k potlačení pooperační bolesti. Pethidin je více rozpustný v tucích než morfin, což je důvodem rychlejšího nástupu účinku. Při silných bolestech je ale pethidin méně účinný než morfin, nevýhodou je také toxicita jeho metabolitu norpethidinu. Je pozoruhodné, že aplikace pethidinu pokračuje již 70 let.

Pethidine (also called meperidine), an opioid analgesic, is a synthetic opioid agonist which has, apart from a strong analgesic effect, anticholinergic activity and local anaesthetic effects. Pethidine is indicated for use in the treatment of severe acute pain after injury or surgery and of chronic pain in cancer patients. It is most frequently given intramuscularly to control postoperative pain. Pethidine is more soluble in fat than morphine and consequently has a more rapid onset of action. Nevertheless, pethidine is less effective in controlling severe pain than morphine and has the disadvantage of being metabolized to toxic norpethidine. It is noteworthy that pethidine has been already used for 70 years.
