Neefektivní a nedostatečná expektorace vede ke stagnaci bronchiální sekrece, a tím dochází ke zvyšování rizika vzniku infekcí a následných zdravotních komplikací. Porucha expektorace je nejčastěji přítomná u nemocných s výrazným oslabením síly dýchacích svalů a provází zejména nervosvalová onemocnění. Součástí komplexní péče by vždy měly být techniky hygieny dýchacích cest. Nejsou-li standardně užívané techniky hygieny dýchacích cest dostatečně efektivní, je důležité do terapie pro usnadnění expektorace včas zařadit mechanickou přístrojovou podporu. V České republice je možné pro mechanickou podporu usnadňující expektoraci využít přístroj CoughAssist.

Cough and expectoration disorders are the most often present in patients with respiratory muscle weakness especially in patients with neuromuscular diseases. Airway clearance techniques should be an important part of pulmonary rehabilitation treatment. When the conventional airway clearance techniques are not sufficient, a mechanical insufflator-exsufflator is important to use. The CoughAssist machine is possible to use for effective expectoration in the Czech Republic.
