Zvládnutie komunikácie s nevyliečiteľne chorým a umierajúcim pacientom môže byť pre sestru veľmi náročné. Kladie nárok na jej osobnú zrelosť i autoregulačné mechanizmy práve z dôvodu, že pacient sa môže vyrovnávať s nevyliečiteľným ochorením individuálne. V komunikácií s nevyliečiteľne chorým a zomierajúcim pacientom by mali byť uplatnené etické princípy, rešpekt a dôstojnosť každého jednotlivca k jeho právam. Z tohto pohľadu je nutné vnímať komunikáciu s týmto pacientom ako neoddeliteľnú súčasť ošetrovateľstva, ako z odborného, tak i z etického hľadiska.
