During the last 20 years, there has been a significant reduction in the clinical use of forceps, and the teaching and demonstration of the proper technique of their use has virtually been eliminated. In addition, the number of Caesarean Sections performed in the United States has reached an all-time high, accounting for approximately 20 percent of all deliveries. Since C-sections are very expensive, require 4 to 5 days hospitalization, and carry the normal risks of abdominal surgery, there has been an attempt by the Federal Government to reduce their number by mandating that forceps delivery techniques be taught again in certified residency programs in Ob/Gyn.
