Neutronové zbraně jsou určeny k ničení živých bytostí, nejsou určeny k destrukci budov a technických zařízení. Miniaturní štěpné jaderné zbraně mají obdobné vlastnosti a jsou nejvhodnější k teroristickému útoku. Ozáření savců neutrony způsobuje těžší deterministické (akutní) radiační poškození, dříve a častěji se budou vyskytovat stochastické (pozdní) účinky, vždy ve srovnání se zářením gama. Tradiční fyzikální ochranné prostředky ocel a olovo nechrání před neutrony. Nepůsobí ani biologické ochranné mechanizmy (tkáňová hypoxic, chemické radioprotektivní látky). Vhodnými ochrannými materiály před neutrony jsou voda a umělé hmoty (polyetylén).
