V posledních dvaceti letech je řadou odborníků z oblasti veřejného zdravotnictví a sociální medicíny intenzivně sledována tzv. nerovnost ve zdraví v Evropě. Autorky popisují současný stav výzkumu v této oblasti ve světě a v České republice (ČR).V ČR zatím není řešen, nebo alespoň dostatečně zohledněn, požadavek redukce nerovností ve zdraví. Zdravotní pojišťovny zohledňují ve svých platbách pouze diference věkové. Problému nerovnosti ve zdraví není v ČR věnována hlubší a soustavná pozornost. V ČR (1999-2001) byla prvním pokusem o komplexní zmapování problému v této oblasti studie "Determinanty zdraví romské populace v České republice". Je to sociálně epidemiologická studie zdravotního stavu, subjektivně vykazované potřeby a spotřeby zdravotní péče (N 1526 osob).Tato studie mimo jiné ukázala i potřebu pokračování takovéhoto výzkumu, potřebu poznání příčin, které způsobují některé odlišnosti zdravotního stavu etnických či národnostních skupin, zejména menšiny romské. V letech 2007-2009 probíhá na Zdravotně sociální fakultě Jihočeské univerzity projekt s názvem "Kvalita života, střední a zdravá délka života z aspektu determinant zdraví u romského obyvatelstva v České republice". V současné době je tento projekt ve stadiu dokončení vyhodnocování dosavadních výsledků výzkumu.

The experts in the field of public health and social medicine observed the health inequality in Europe in the last twenty years.The authors describe the current state of research in this area in the world and the in Czech Republic (CR). The requirement of reduction of health inequalities is not yet solved or sufficiently taken into account in the CR. Health inequalities is not paid enough attention in the CR. The first attempt it was comprehensive mapping of the problem in the study "Determinants of health of Romany population in the Czech Republic" in the years 1999-2001. It was a socio-epidemiological study of health, subjective reporting needs and consumption of health care (a set of N 1,526 people). This study has shown the need the continuation of such research. Understanding the reasons that cause differences health status of ethnic or national groups, particularly the Romany minority need additional research. Ongoing research project entitled "Quality of life, the middle and healthy life from the perspective of health determinants in the Romany population in the Czech Republic" at University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice the Faculty of Health and Social Studies tries to solve some answer on this problem. The project is at the stage of completion of the evaluation of existing research results at present.
