Idiopatická pľúcna fibróza (IPF) je najčastejší a samostatný typ chronickej fibrotizujúcej intersticiálnej pneumónie neznámej etiológie, ktorá je ohraničená na pľúca a asociovaná s histopatologickým typom „obvyklej intersticiálnej pneumónie“ (UIP). IPF má najhoršiu prognózu a odpoveď na liečbu spomedzi chronických idiopatických intersticiálnych pneumónií. Klinický priebeh je zvyčajne pomaly progresívny, ale môže byť prerušený akútnymi exacerbáciami s náhlym klinickým zhoršením stavu až úmrtím. Počítačová tomografia s vysokým rozlíšením (HRCT) môže spoľahlivo identifikovať obraz IPF u väčšiny pacientov. Funkčné testy pľúc sú rozhodujúce pre odhad prognózy a sledovanie pacientov s IPF.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the most common and distinctive type of chronic fibrosing interstitial pneumonia of unknow cause limited to the lungs and associated with a histopathologic pattern of usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP). IPF has the worst prognosis and the poorest response to therapy among the chronic idiopathic interstitial pneumonias. The clinical course of IPF is steadily progressive but acute exacerbations may cause sudden clinical worsening and death. High-resolution computed tomography can make a confident diagnosis in a majority of patients with IPF. Lung function tests are crucial in predicting prognosis and follow up of patients with IPF.
