Predpokladá sa, že degeneratívne ochorenie disku je výrazne geneticky determinované, mechanicky vyvolané a biologicky ovplyvnované. V súčastnosti zaznamenal výrazný pokrok v diagnostike degeneratívneho ochorenia chrbtice zavedením magnetickej rezonancie a zavedením pojmu degeneratívneho ochorenia disku. Základnou otázkou chirurga a postoja k operačnému výkonu je korelácia grafických vyšetrení, klinického stavu, komplexná konzervatívna liečba a dôkladná diferenciálna diagnostika.
