Pomocné vědy historické, postupně vznikající do počátku 20. století, slouží ke zkoumání a kritickému hodnocení pramenů historických věd k určení míry autentičnosti pramene a hodnoty v něm obsažených informací. Jejich výuka je od 19. století součástí univerzitní výuky historie vyučované spolu s archivářstvím. Jejich společným jmenovatelem je zkoumání (jakéhokoliv relevantního) kontextu historických pramenů a artefaktů. Podobně lze za pomocné vědy informační označit soubor speciálních vědních disciplín, vznikajících od poloviny 20. století, které slouží ke zkoumání a kritickému hodnocení informačních pramenů a jejich kontextů. Měly by pokrývat oblasti jako je vyhledávání a práce s literaturou, kvalita zdrojů, psaní odborných prací, jak a kde je publikovat a jak v nich správně prezentovat dosažené výsledky. A v neposlední řadě by se měly zabývat nástroji, používanými k hodnocení vědy.

Auxiliary historical sciences, developing gradually until the beginning of the 20th century, analyse and evaluate critically the sources of historical sciences. Similarly, auxiliary information sciences, emerging in the course of the 20th century as a complex of special scientific disciplines, examine and evaluate information sources. They should cover such areas as searching literature and working with it, the quality of sources, the style of writing special professional texts and publishing them (how and where), presenting obtained results correctly, and selecting and using appropriate instruments for assessment of science. Illustrative examples point to one common denominator of these disciplines – the study of (any relevant) contexts of information sources and artefacts.
