Two members of ant genus Solenopsis in the family Formicidae, order Hymenoptera, accidentally introduced into the United States at Mobile, Alabama. Fire ants are now found in many states from California to Florida. Fire ant bites typically cause a burning sensation, welts and blisters but can cause systemic or life-threatening reactions.
