Odnětí alkoholu vede k abstinenčnímu syndromu. U alkoholiků jsou častá nervová poškození, psychické poruchy např. delirium tremens, demence, jaterní cirhóza, žaludeční vředy a krvácení ze zažívacího traktu, tuberkulóza aj. (cit. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, most notably denial.
