Kontrakce respiračních svalů během nádechu. Probíhá ve třech fázích: (1) překonání elasticity plicní tkáně (plicní poddajnost přinutí plíce roztáhnout se proti vlastní elasticitě), (2) překonání rezistence tkání a viskozity plic a struktur hrudní stěny, a (3) překonání odporu dýchacích cest během pohybu vzduchu do plic. Je nepřímo úměrná plicní poddajnosti. Dechová práce není vydechování - to je zcela pasivní proces zapříčiněný elastickým svinutím plíce a hrudního koše.

RESPIRATORY MUSCLE contraction during INHALATION. The work is accomplished in three phases: LUNG COMPLIANCE work, that required to expand the LUNGS against its elastic forces; tissue resistance work, that required to overcome the viscosity of the lung and chest wall structures; and AIRWAY RESISTANCE work, that required to overcome airway resistance during the movement of air into the lungs.
