INTRODUCTION: Reporting guidelines were established to improve the quality of scientific papers. Currently, the most common are CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials), STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) and CARE (Clinical Consensus-based Case Reporting Guideline). Spin can be defined as (un)intentionally biased interpretation of results aimed at convincing readers of a positive benefit of any given intervention. The aim of the study was to evaluate the adherence of papers published in Perspectives in Surgery to CONSORT, STROBE or CARE and to identify the frequency of spin. METHODS: All articles published between 10/2014 and 9/2016 were analysed. Editorials and letters to editor were excluded. Original papers and case reports were assessed using 12 parameters. Any conclusion not corresponding to outcomes from pre-defined measurements was identified as spin. Descriptive statistics were used. RESULTS: Of 210 articles, 144 (69%) were analysed - 67 (47%) retrospective studies, 3 (2%) prospective studies and 74 (51%) case reports. The studies showed the highest compliance in terms of reporting the cohort size (89%). On the other hand, study limitations were presented in 22%. Performed investigations and interventions were described in all (100%) case reports. Conversely, limitations were not mentioned in any. None of the analysed papers met all of the 12 monitored parameters. Spin was identified in 47 (67%) original articles. CONCLUSION: None of the evaluated papers adhered completely to the current reporting guidelines. Spin occurred in more than 2/3 of the publications.Key words: reporting guidelines spin CONSORT STROBE CARE.

INTRODUCTION: Renal cancer is unique for many reasons. One reason is that renal cell carcinoma can grow directly into the drainage veins of the kidney, which enter the inferior vena cava leading to the heart. This growth of tumor cells into the veins is called a tumor thrombus and is a locally aggressive renal cancer. The present article informs about the experience of our cardiac surgery department together with the transplant surgery department in successful surgical removal of a kidney with tumor, with invasion into the inferior vena cava, right atrium of the heart and pulmonary artery in two case reports. CASE REPORTS: A 32 years old female without significant history, with suddenly evolving dyspnea was urgently admitted to hospital. Her condition was suspected to be caused by pulmonary artery embolisation. The diagnosis was confirmed by CT scan which revealed unknown tumor mass of the right kidney and tumor embolisation in inferior vena cava and pulmonary artery. The patient was urgently operated by a vascular surgeon and cardiothoracic surgeon. They successfully performed left radical nephrectomy and total thromboembolectomy of the tumorous masses from vena cava inferior and pulmonary artery. The postoperative course was without complications, postoperative CT revealed no residual masses, and the patient was discharged in a good condition from the hospital. A 58 years old male with arterial hypertension suffered from orchiepididymitis. CT scan showed a tumor of the left kidney with propagation of tumorous masses to inferior vena cava and pulmonary artery. In elective surgery the vascular surgeon and cardiothoracic surgeon successfully performed left radical nephrectomy with total thromboembolectomy of the tumorous masses from inferior vena cava and pulmonary artery. After surgery a temporary paralytic ileus and an episode of atrial fibrillation occurred. Both are common postoperative complications related to the given surgical procedure. Follow-up CT scan showed no residual tumor or thrombus in inferior vena cava and pulmonary artery. Echocardiography revealed persistent dilation of right compartments of the heart with good systolic functions of both ventricles. The patient was discharged from hospital in a good condition. CONCLUSION: Surgical removal of renal tumor and tumor thrombus - radical nephrectomy with tumor thrombectomy - can be a curative treatment and can ensure long-term survival of the patient. Depending on the extent of the tumor thrombus, these operations can be performed in different ways - mini-invasive, robotic or open. When open surgery is used, it is possible to perform the procedure with or without extracorporeal circulation (cardiopulmonary bypass - CPB) depending on the extent of the disease.

The article is a continuation of the "Beginnings of the Czech Society of Surgeons" and based on available reports in the Czech Medical Journal and the Surgical Review and present an account on the development of the Society in 1920-1939. The author mentions the splitting of the Czechoslovak Surgical and Gynaecological Society first into a Surgical and Gynaecological Section of the Czechoslovak Surgical and Gynaecological Society from 1930, and subsequently the Czechoslovak Society of Surgeons from 1936 which, however, did not last very long in view of the events which afflicted our country in 1938. Therefore it was changed, consistent with changes of the statute into the Czech Society of Surgeons. The author describes also the foundation of the journal Rozhledy v chirurgii (Surgical Review) in 1937-1938 replacing the former Rozhledy v chirurgii a gynaekologii founded in 1921.

The objective was to assess in a qualitative study how correctly anatomical terms are used in four selected Czech medical journals (Acta Chirurgiae Orthopaedicae and Traumatologicae Cechoslovaca, Ceská gynecology, Ceská radiology and Rozhledy v chirurgii, 1990-1996). A total of 1200 articles were evaluated where 145 anatomical terms were detected which differed from P.N.A. and from Nomina Anatomica valid at present. Of these 25 were terms from B.N.A. (4) and from I.N.A. (21). Approximately twice as frequent were anatomical and clinical eponyms (52). The highest ratio (71) was formed by incorrect terms (36 Latin and 35 Czech). The authors feel that in the improvement of the standard of exact anatomical terminology in clinical medicine as well as in the professional literature in future a part should be played by better teaching at medical faculties within the framework of the new curriculum and by higher demands on the standard of manuscripts accepted by editors of professional journals.

The authors present a brief of the position of Czech Surgery in medicine during the last century. They mention the conditions for association of the Czech doctors in the second half of the 19th century as a manifestation of national revival efforts. In 1860 the Czech Medical Society was founded and in 1862 the first issue of the Czech Medical Journal was published. The climax of Czech desires of revival was the separation of Czech and German clinics in 1883. The development of some medical disciplines, incl. surgical disciplines, made the surgeons abandon the Czech Medical Society and after the establishment of the committee of the Czechoslovak Republic they founded in 1920 the committee of the Czechoslovak Society for Surgery and Gynaecology. In April 1921 the first congress of the Czechoslovak Surgical and Gynaecological Society was held. At this occasion the first issue of the Surgical and Gynaecological Review (Rozhledy v chirurgii a gynaekologii) was published. Both events laid the foundations of the contemporary Czech Society of Surgeons.

INTRODUCTION: The publishing of our case report on an idiopathic compartment syndrome of both upper limbs after icing a contusion trauma was motivated by another article on the acute spontaneous compartment syndrome of upper limb published in Rozhledy v chirurgii 8/2021. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 43-year-old man admitted in the evening for painful massive swelling of both upper extremities. The swelling developed immediately after icing his bruises suffered due to a probable fall on the previous day in a state of inebriety. Compartment syndrome of the left hand and right forearm was diagnosed; subsequently, adequate dermatofasciectomy resulted in normalization of the condition in both upper limbs. The patients condition was cured to a full extent without any disorders of perfusion, mobility or sensation in both upper extremities. CONCLUSION: Only few reports on the atraumatic compartment syndrome of upper extremity can be found in the literature and it is an acute condition encountered quite rarely at outpatient offices of surgery. Nevertheless, we need to be able to recognize this nosological unit and provide proper treatment in time, otherwise the patient may suffer serious permanent damage.
