In this paper, we show different activities of the European Center for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology (EuroMISE Center) of Charles University and Academy of Sciences in the field of medical informatics, statistics and epidemiology education and training. The development of these activities started within the TEMPUS-PHARE project in 1993 and they are continuing with the support of another project, particularly the IT EDUCTRA (Information Technologies Education and Training) (Fourth Framework Programme) project. New approaches using the Internet as well as newly developed programmes are described.

The paper gives information on education and training covered by the Joint European Project (JEP) entitled 'Education in the Methodology Field of Health Care, EuroMISE (European Education in Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology)', that has been running for 3 years (1993-1995) under the umbrella of the European TEMPUS-PHARE programme. Training and education in EuroMISE consists of three overlapping methodological branches: Medical informatics (MI), medical statistics (MS) and epidemiology (E). The teaching scheme has been developed in cooperation between 11 universities in the European Union and Charles University in Prague (four medical faculties, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and the Faculty Hospital) together with the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Institute of Computer Science). The paper shows EuroMISE targets, structure of EuroMISE courses and conferences and gives further views to the future in this field of education.

The paper describes the history of medical informatics in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. It focuses on the topics of medical informatics education and decision support methods and systems. Several conferences held in Czechoslovakia and in the Czech Republic organized in cooperation with IMIA or EFMI are described. Support of European Union and Czech agencies in several European and national projects focused on medical informatics topics highly contributed to medical informatics development in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic and to the establishment of the European Center for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology as the joint workplace of Charles University in Prague and Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 1994.

The first experience with medical education in courses developed using the guidelines of the Joint European Project EuroMISE under the TEMPUS-PHARE program is presented. Training and education in EuroMISE consists of three overlapping methodological branches: medical informatics, medical statistics, and epidemiology. The teaching scheme has been developed in cooperation with Charles University in Prague and cooperating EC universities. Running EuroMISE courses in English (first for Czech university teachers) should have multiple effects in disseminating the acquired knowledge and skills.

1. CURRICULUM DESCRIPTION. Twenty years ago, our faculty organized several lessons in a physiology course to inform students about computers. Recently, new courses in informatics were established. In their first year, students take a compulsory course (15 hours=h) of basic computer science (computers databases, networking, and basic non-medical computer software). A special elective course in medical informatics (30h) can be taken in the 4th year (about 20% of students pass tis course). This course includes the following lessons: computers in medicine (2h), scientific information (4h), classification in medicine (2h- including ICD, SNOMED etc.), computer support of clinical decision (2h-calculation principles with demonstration), artificial intelligence (2h), statistical software (2h), hospital information systems (2h), software for practitioners (2h), biosignal and image analysis (4th), computers in pharmacology (2h), computer simulation (2h), support of metabolic care (2h-consultations, risk calculations), and laboratory information systems (2h). The same course, though slightly differences, is used for paramedical students (occupational therapy, health education, and nursing). Medical technology was established in a three year curriculum courses in the 1st year include common courses in electronic devices (60 h), computers and programming (120 h), biophysics (90 h), biomechanics (30 h), and different medical courses (500 h). For the 2nd and 3rd year, 75% of the courses (700 h per year) are technical e.g., medical devices, information systems, signal and picture analysis, laboratory technique, and data protection. 2. CONCLUSION AND PERSPECTIVES. Students of medicine, and some paramedical studies, are able to use computer in their profession after having taken these courses. Bachelors of medical technology find application in biomedical research, hospitals, and medical technology firms.

The subject known as clinical informatics started to develop in the 60's in medical education of clinical disciplines and was mainly concerned with structuring information for instruction and examinations. This application contributed substantially to the development of the discipline of medical education that started to be considered as a legitimate new field that could become a clinical sub-specialty in its own right. Due to uneven access to computer hardware the area developed differently in the West and East. We elaborated our projects for application of didactic games in internal medicine for the paper and pencil system. On turn of the 90's the use of PCs brought new possibilities for the application of computer programme support in the analysis of the effectiveness of the system of instruction in internal medicine we were concerned with. We carried out two longitudinal studies in clinical memory of the 4th and 6th year students of the same study cycle. In a non-anonymous questionnaire, more than 1000 respondents described their experience in observation/examination of 70 recommended disorders important for internal practice. We offer some unpublished results showing how the clinical memory of the students is formed during the four-year study and how few possibilities there are for some students to see some manifestations of various clinical disorders. Thinking about the future we are preparing a series of integrated medical and language programmes for the use of the multi-medial approach.

OBJECTIVES: In the paper we described the partial achievements reached by the EuroMISE Center in research and higher education, supporting better healthcare in future information society. METHODS: Through the research cooperation, the EuroMISE Centre suggests publicly available tools and methods that allow the application of new technologies for various healthcare organizations and citizens, with a special focus on the national environment of the Czech Republic. It provides a platform for a greater level of research cooperation with the usage of the most up-to-date information and communication technologies and a wide spectrum of clinical and genetic data and knowledge. RESULTS: Results of research and higher education of the EuroMISE Centre in the field of Biomedical Informatics are described in outputs of national and European projects. Further results have been published and/or presented at national and international meetings and incorporated in education and healthcare practice. CONCLUSIONS: The long-term effect of postgraduate doctoral education in the field of biomedical informatics consists in the rapid increase of scientists that are needed in the Czech Republic to reach the goals of information society in health care. The multidisciplinary research at the EuroMISE Center moves towards direct usage in the informational support of diagnostics and therapy, mining of the medical databases, and in the customization of healthcare based on the clinical and genetic profile of a patient.

The emergence of the information technologies has seriously changed the healthcare system. Thus, health professionals need to be well-educated in order to respond successfully to the challenges of their job. In higher education programs in, biomedical informatics and health informatics are continuously developing. At this study more than 500 universities and colleges in Europe were checked in order to find related educational programs at all academic levels. The outcome of the research includes 316 study programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level including a variety of specializations. The majority of these programs are taking place in Czech Republic, Ireland and Austria. In contrast, countries such as Croatia and Cyprus have very low number of study programs in these fields.
