The microstructure of compression molded Estane 5703 films exposed to 11%, 45%, and 80% relative humidity and 70 °C for 1 and 2 months has been studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Scattering data indicated increase of the interdomain distance and domain size with a higher humidity and longer aging time. GPC data showed a progressive shortening of polyurethane chains with increasing humidity and aging time. The shortening of the polyurethane chains caused a drop of the glass transition temperature of soft segments, and promoted crystallization of the soft segments during long-time storage of the aged samples at room temperature. FTIR showed a substantial increase in the number of inter-urethane H-bonds in the aged samples. This correlates with the increase of the hard domain size and the degree of phase separation as measured by SANS. The data collected reveals that the reduced steric hindrance caused by hydrolysis of ester links in polybutylene adipate residues promotes the organization of hard segments into domains, leading to the increase of domain size and distance, as well as phase segregation in aged Estane. These findings provide insight into the effects of humidity and thermal aging on the microstructure of aged polyester urethane from molecular to nanoscale level.

The metallurgical preparation and microstructure of as-cast Ti-45Al-2W-xC (in at.%) alloys were investigated. Five alloys with carbon content ranging from 0.38 to 1.96 at.% were prepared by vacuum induction melting (VIM) in graphite crucibles, followed by centrifugal casting into graphite moulds. A master 15W-85Al (at.%) alloy with a relatively low melting point and TiC powder were used to facilitate fast dissolution of W during VIM and to achieve the designed content of C in the as-cast alloys, respectively. The increase in the content of C affects the solidification path of the studied alloys. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and microstructural observations show that the alloys with carbon content up to 0.75 at.% solidify with β primary phase and their dendritic as-cast microstructure consists of the α2(Ti3Al) + γ(TiAl) lamellar regions, retained B2 phase enriched by W and single γ phase formed in the interdendritic region. The increase in the content of C above 0.75 at.% leads to the formation of primary lathe-shaped Ti2AlC carbides, which act as effective heterogeneous nucleation sites of β dendrites during the solidification and grain refinement of the alloys with 1.15 and 1.96 at.% C. The increase in the content of C leads to an increase in Vickers hardness and elastic modulus in the alloys containing 1.96 at.% C.

The mineralising effect of CuO on microstructure and phase composition of SO3 -doped clinker was studied by a combination of phase analysis, light and scanning electron microscopy and QXRD. Results show proportionally higher C4 AF content in clinker interstitial matter due to CuO doping. CuO also lowers the SO3 incorporation in main clinker phases C3 S and C2 S. Observation in back-scattered electrons revealed that Cu crystallises mainly as a Cu-rich phase in the clinker interstitial matter and inclusions in crystals of C2 S with distorted structure. CuO partially inhibits the incorporation of Fe2 O3 in C2 S.

Perishable commodities like cassava necessitate effective postharvest preservation for various industrial applications. Hence, optimizing pretreatment processes and modeling drying kinetics hold paramount importance. This study aimed to optimize cassava pretreatment using the central composite design of a response surface methodology while also assessing microstructure and dehydration kinetics. Diverse chemical and thermal pretreatments were explored, encompassing sodium metabisulfite concentrations (0-4% w/w), citric acid concentrations (0-4% w/w), and blanching time (0-4 min). The four investigated responses were moisture content, whiteness index, activation energy (Ea), and effective moisture diffusivity (Deff). Employing five established drying models, suitability was appraised after optimal pretreatment conditions were determined. The findings revealed that moisture content ranged from 5.82 to 9.42% db, whereas the whiteness index ranged from 87.16 to 94.23. Deff and Ea ranged from 5.06 × 10-9 to 6.71 × 10-9 m2/s and 29.65-33.28 kJ/mol, respectively. The optimal pretreatment conditions for dried cassava were identified by optimizing the use of 1.31% citric acid, 1.03% sodium metabisulfite, and blanching time for 1.01 min. The microstructure indicated that particular chemical and thermal pretreatment configurations yielded particles in the shape of circular and elliptical granules. The logarithmic model provided the most accurate description of the dehydration kinetics, with the highest R2 value (0.9859) and the lowest χ2, RSME, and SSE values of 0.0351, 0.0015, and 0.0123, respectively.

Implant surface properties of Ti6Al4V alloy that is currently used as a biocompatible material because of a variety of unique properties can be improved by a self-organized TiO2 layer. The TiO2 nanotubes forming on the titanium-based materials is a relatively recent technology for the surface properties modification and represents pronounced potential in promoting cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation that facilitate an implant osseointegration. This work focuses on the influence of surface treatment quality and anodic oxidation parameters on the structure features and properties of TiO2 nanotube coatings. The nanotubes were formed on Ti6Al4V alloy substrates by simultaneous surface oxidation and controlled dissolving of an oxide film in the presence of fluorine ions. The anodization process on ground or polished samples was performed at experimental condition of 30 V for 1 h. The selected anodized samples were heat treated for 2 h at 500 °C under flowing argon. All samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. The corrosion rate in physiological solution reached 0.0043, 0.0182, and 0.0998 mm per year for the samples in polished and not-anodized, as-anodized, and anodized-heat treated conditions, respectively.

It is not realistic to optimize the roll pass design of profile rolling mills, which typically roll hundreds of profiles, using physical modelling or operational rolling. The use of reliable models of microstructure evolution is preferable here. Based on the mathematical equations describing the microstructure evolution during hot rolling, a modified microstructure evolution model was presented that better accounts for the influence of strain-induced precipitation (SIP) on the kinetics of static recrystallization. The time required for half of the structure to soften, t0.5, by static recrystallization was calculated separately for both situations in which strain-induced precipitation occurred or did not occur. On this basis, the resulting model was more sensitive to the description of grain coarsening in the high-rolling-temperature region, which is a consequence of the rapid progress of static recrystallization and the larger interpass times during rolling on cross-country and continuous mills. The modified model was verified using a plain strain compression test (PSCT) simulation of rolling a 100-mm-diameter round bar performed on the Hydrawedge II hot deformation simulator (HDS-20). Four variants of simulations were performed, differing in the rolling temperature in the last four passes. For comparison with the outputs of the modified model, an analysis of the austenite grain size after rolling was performed using optical metallography. For indirect comparison with the model outputs, the SIP initiation time was determined based on the NbX precipitate size distribution obtained by TEM. Using the PSCT and the outputs from the modified microstructure evolution model, it was found that during conventional rolling, strain-induced precipitation occurs after the last pass and thus does not affect the austenite grain size. By lowering the rolling temperature, it was possible to reduce the grain size by up to 56 μm, while increasing the mean flow stress by a maximum of 74%. The resulting grain size for all four modes was consistent with the operating results.

Despite the many benefits associated with the utilization of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), several drawbacks have been reported. In particular, the effect of SAPs on microstructure, together with its consequences for mechanical properties, is not fully understood yet for some composite materials. This study analyzes the role of SAPs in the formation of the microstructure of lime composites, taking into account their chemical composition. The obtained experimental results show that the particle size and cross-linking density of used SAPs are crucial parameters affecting both the microstructure and mechanical performance of the analyzed composites. Coarser SAPs with low cross-linking density in the dosage of 0.5 and 1 wt.% are found as the most suitable solution, leading even to a slight improvement of mechanical parameters. The secondary porosity formed by swelled hydrogels is identified as a very significant factor since hydrogel-filled voids do not contribute to the strength parameters. The formation of the affected zone around SAP cores depends on the chemical composition of SAPs considerably as the higher cross-linking density influences the desorption rate. Based on achieved results, utilization of SAPs in building materials should be studied at a more detailed level with particular importance on the definition of SAP-related voids and affected zone around SAP particles.

The powder of an Al7075 alloy was prepared by gas atomization. A combination of cellular, columnar, and equiaxed dendritic-like morphology was observed in individual powder particles with continuous layers of intermetallic phases along boundaries. The cells are separated predominantly by high-angle boundaries, the areas with dendritic-like morphology usually have a similar crystallographic orientation. Spark plasma sintering resulted in a fully dense material with a microstructure similar to that of the powder material. The continuous layers of intermetallic phases are replaced by individual particles located along internal boundaries, coarse particles are formed at the surface of original powder particles. Microhardness measurements revealed both artificial and natural ageing behavior similar to that observed in ingot metallurgy material. The minimum microhardness of 81 HV, observed in the sample annealed at 300 °C, reflects the presence of coarse particles. The peak microhardness of 160 HV was observed in the sample annealed at 500 °C and then aged at room temperature. Compression tests confirmed high strength combined with sufficient plasticity. Annealing even at 500 °C does not significantly influence the distribution of grain sizes-about 45% of the area is occupied by grains with the size below 10 µm.

Three types of commercial austenitic stainless steels, 1.4307 (AISI 304 L), 1.4404 (AISI 316 L) 1.4845 (AISI 310 S) with different chemical compositions, are subjected to severe plastic deformation at room temperature by a unique Dual Rolling Equal Channel Extrusion (DRECE) method. Its impact is evaluated from the viewpoint of microstructure analyses, X-ray diffraction, and macroscopic magnetic properties completed by microscopic Mössbauer characteristics. The study also includes the solution annealing at 950 °C for 0.5 h to follow the recovering austenitic structure and paramagnetic state of steels with the aim to offer more information with respect to new technical applications. The results show the importance of the steel's chemical composition and microstructure, mainly grain size, on the stability of the austenitic structure closely associated with the paramagnetic behaviour.

The aim of this study was to prepare a low porosity bulk sample with a fine-grained structure from an AlZrTi alloy. Nanostructured powder particles were prepared by mechanical milling of gas atomized powder. The mechanically milled powder was consolidated using spark plasma sintering technology at 475 °C for 6 min using a pressure of 100 MPa. Sintering led to a low porosity sintered sample with a bimodal microstructure. The sintered sample was revealed to be composed of non-recrystallized grains with an approximate size of about 100 nm encompassed by distinct clusters of coarser, micrometer-sized grains. Whereas the larger grains were found to be lean on second phase particles, a high density of second phase particles was found in the areas of fine grains. The microhardness of the milled powder particles was established to be 163 ± 15 HV0.01, which decreased to a slightly lower value of 137 ± 25 HV0.01 after sintering.
