Ambulatory twenty four hour blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is an exact method, enabling by repeated measurements to create blood pressure profile, which shows a close correlation with end organ damage. Normal values were taken from clinical trials, where the mean age of probands was highly above 30 years. The aim of this trial was to determine mean values for ABPM in population aged 18-30 years and to create "normal values" for this population. We have examined 162 probands. The mean office blood pressure was 128.18 +/- 11.2/82.91 +/- 8.29 mm Hg, the mean ABPM (24 hours) was 118.51 +/- 9.11/70.59 +/- 6.30 mm Hg. Systolic, mean and pulse pressure was significantly higher in males. Systolic and pulse blood pressure showed a close correlation with height, weight, waist and waist/hip ratio (r = 0.40-0.47). The upper value of 24 hour BP in young population is between 125/75 mm Hg and 130/80 mm Hg according to our results.

The cold pressor test is used in the clinical testing of the autonomic nervous system. However, little is known about changes in the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system during repeated challenge with cold. Heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), T-wave amplitude of ECG (TWA), blood pressure, body temperature and perceived pain were recorded in 18 male subjects during three CPTs which consisted of four minutes immersion of the left hand into cold water at 1 degree C. Breathing during CPT was either spontaneous or paced at 0.23 Hz or 0.1 Hz. Pain intensity and HR decreased and TWA increased during the cold immersion and in the resting period preceding cold in the second and third trials. Systolic and pulse blood pressure increased in resting periods in the third trial. RSA increased in the second and third cold challenge during paced breathing at 0.1 Hz only. A decrease in body temperature (0.48 degree C) at the end of the experiment correlated marginally with HR changes. Our study shows that sustained cardiovascular changes are induced by the first challenge with cold, and persist or increase with repeated cold pressor tests.

Among 30 patients with ventricular arrhythmia resistant to conventional antiarrhythmic therapy, 33% showed normalization of heart rhythm after single i.v. injection of Craviten at a dose of 6 mg. In all patients, sensitive and resistant to this dose of Craviten, serum dopamine beta-hydroxylase activity was initially twice as high as that in healthy controls. After Craviten administration, enzyme activity normalized in the sensitive persons only, parallelly with rhythm normalization. In this group of patients the initially increased erythrocyte membrane ATPase activities (total and ouabain-insensitive) also normalized.

With the purpose of searching for new clinical features in labile hypertension (LH), systolic time intervals were recorded non-invasively in a group of LH patients. Obtained data were compared with a matched group of normal individuals and also with a group of young patients with chronic essential hypertension. An increase in heart rate and a reduction in carotid pulse upstroke time (Ut) in labile hypertensives differentiated this group from chronic hypertensives and normal subjects. A tendency towards a reduction in heart rate, together with an increase in Ut and ejection time during a two years follow-up study, was accompanied by stable recordings of high blood pressure values in most of the patients belonging to the LH groups. Considering LH as the initial, reversible stage of a pathologic process, changes in heart rate, Ut and ejection time, together with high blood pressure values reflect an evolution to chronicity.

The possibility of using the test for pulse-rate response to gradated load in the evaluation of the endurance component of horse performance (in other words, response to the degree of horse adaptation to load) is discussed in detail. A mathematic-statistical analysis of regression coefficients is performed in the equations of the dependence of pulse rate on speed obtained in 278 three years old horses in the period following the termination of the basic training (145 Bohemian Warm-Blooded horses, 115 Kladrub Black horses and 18 English Half-Breds). A ten-score scale is calculated on the basis of the quantiles of normal distribution. The performance of a tested horse can be evaluated on the basis of this scale with an actually measured regression coefficient.

On the basis of test results, regarding the pulse rate response to the increased load, obtained from 278 three-year-old horses after finishing their elementary training (145 Bohemian warm-blooded horses, 115 Kladrub Black horses and 18 English half-bred horses), a method was worked for the evaluation of their performance. As an evaluating criterion a velocity (v170) was chosen which was obtained from an experimentally determined regression dependence of velocity on the pulse rate at 170 pulses per minute. A set of v170 data were statistically processed and on the basis of quantiles of normal distribution for the used breeds the variance zones were computed which were evaluated with 1 to 10 scores. By this evaluation the degree of performance of the tested horse can be estimated with regard to the corresponding breed.

Piritramide with chlorpromazine in doses of 3 mg kg-1 of live weight causes total anesthesia the intensity of which differs according to the breed and condition of the individual. Anesthesia sets in in 30 to 45 minutes and lasts for 3/4 to 1 1/2 hour. During the anesthesia somatic temperature and frequency of pulse decrease, and even after 24 hours they do not reach the original values. In a majority of cases breathing frequency rises insignificantly, and after 2 to 3 hours it returns to the normal. In single cases there occurs an extreme increase of the number of respirations. The per minute breath volume in the various cases and measurings differs considerably. In the course of anesthesia there occurs an increase of glucose, a decrease of the total protein, an increase of the activity of GPT and GOT, a decrease of the numbers of erythrocytes, of haematocrit and haemoglobin, an increase of pCO2 of the blood, and a decrease of the actual pH of the blood. In the number of leucocytes no changes occurred. The changes in the BE were insignificant. All deviations, except the deviations of the pulse and of the temperature, return to the original values within 24 hours. In the ECG there occurred a fluctuation in the forming of emotions and changes of the amplitude values of the QRS group and of the T wave. In the EEG striking periodical complexes of slow waves were found or combinations of slow and rapid frequencies.
