This system of care of the cardiac emergency which is taught in this volume enables the non-specialist doctor, nurse or paramedic to deal with these emergencies in a logical and systematic way, and facilitates subsequent management by other medical specialists. The reader is presented with a practical approach to care, relevant to all healthcare professionals working in the acute sector. Revisions to the tried and tested first edition are the outcome of consultation with senior healthcare workers from five acute specialties and a professional educator. They take into account new European Resuscitation Council protocols as well as feedback from doctors, nurses and paramedics who have completed the Advanced Cardiac Life Support course. Further additions to the text include discussion of pacing, risks to rescuers and anaphylaxis.
