Všeobecná deklarace lidských práv byla přijata Valným shromážděním Organizace spojených národů dne 10. prosince 1948. Je zdůrazněn význam tohoto dokumentu a jsou citovány a komentovány jeho články, které mohou mít souvislost s lékařskou etikou. Text upozorňuje na současné porušování ducha deklarace: inherentní důstojnost a hodnota každé lidské bytosti je popírána implicitním nebo dokonce explicitním způsobem. Popisuje rovněž dnešní matení pojmu a obsahu práv v nepřirozeném a zrůdném smyslu („právo na smrt“, „právo nenarodit se“).
On December 10, 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The very importance of this document is pointed out and its articles, which might be connected with medical ethics, are quoted and commented upon. Attention is devoted to the fact that the declaration is under attack today: the inherent dignity and worth of every human being is denied, implicitly or even explicitly. The text describes also the confusion dealing with the interpretation of the content of some rights in an unnatural and even monstrous manner („the right to die“, „the rights not to be born“).
