Oxid dusnatý pôsobí v respiračnom systéme ako neurotransmiter neadrenergickej necholinergickej mediácie a podieľa sa na regulácii fyziologických funkcií. Najdôležitejšie farmakologické aktivity oxidu dusnatého sa prejavujú v oblasti hladkého svalu ciev a bronchov, sekrécie hlienu, mukociliárneho transportu, pôsobenia v podmienkach zápalu, hyperreaktivity a obranných reakciách organizmu. Zohráva dôležitú úlohu v patogenéze rôznych ochorení respiračného systému o čom svedčia rôzne koncentiácie oxidu dusnatého vo vydychovanom vzduchu najmä pri zápalových ochoreniach. Predmetom záujmu je zistovanie možnosti korelácie hodnoty tohoto markeru s eozínofilným zápalom či atopiou. Ďalšou oblastou sledovania je využitie tejto radikálovej molekuly, látok ovplyvňujúcich jeho syntézu, transmisiu a látok modulujúcich účinky NO v diagnostike a terapii, čo by mohlo poskytnúť ďalšie farmákoterapeutické alternatívy v pneumológii.

Nitric oxide acts as neurotransmitter of the nonadrenergic noncholinergic mediation in respiratory system and participates in the physiological functions regulation. Most important pharmacological activities of nitric oxide are manifested in the area of vessels and bronchial smooth muscle, mucous secretion, mucociliary transport, activity in the conditions of the inflammation, hyperreactivity and defensive reaction of the organism. It plays the important role in the pathogenesis of different respiratory diseases what demonstrate various concentrations of nitric oxide in the exhaled air mainly in the inflammatory diseases. The estimation of the possibility of the correlation of this marker value to the eosinophilic inflammation or atopy is the topic of the interest. The utilization of this small radical molecule as well as of agents influencing its synthesis, transmission and modulating nitric oxide effects in the diagnosis and therapy is other area of the following that can render another pharmacotherapeutic alternatives in pneumology.
