10 pacientů s první epizodou schizofrenie bylo v době klinické stabilizace vyšetřeno Wechslerovou škálou paměti (WMS III) a magnetickou rezonancí s vysokým rozlišením. MRI obrazy byly využity k segmentaci a výpočtu objemu hippocampu za účelem studia vztahů mezi velikostí hippocampu a paměťovými funkcemi u schizofrenie. Stejným způsobem bylo vyšetřeno i 10 zdravých dobrovolníků k porovnání velikostí hippocampu u obou skupin. Velikost hippocampu se nelišila mezi zdravými dobrovolníky a pacienty se schizofrenií, zároveň nebyla nalezena korelace mezi paměťovými funkcemi pacientů a objemem hippocampu. Přitom byla u pacientů se schizofrenií porucha paměti přítomná. Výsledky studie spolu s literárními údaji demonstrují složitost vztahu struktury mozku a jeho funkce u schizofrenie.

10 first episode schizophrenia men were assessed by Wechsler memory scale III and high-resolution MRI when clinically stabilized. MRI scans were used for hippocampal volume computation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between hippocampal volume and memory functions in the first episode schizophrenia. 10 normal controls matched for age and gender were also assessed with MRI to be able to compare hippocampal volumes in the two subject groups. We did not find any significant differences in hippocampal volume between schizophrenia patients and normal controls. Subsequently, we did not find any significant correlations between hippocampal volume and memory parameters, despite the fact of expressed memory dysfunction in our patient group. The results, together with literature data, show rather complicated relationship between brain structure and function in schizophrenia.
