Výsledky chirurgického léčení jsou u naprosté většiny obézních dlouhodobé, trvalé a vedou k výrazným hmotnostním úbytkům. Bylo prokázáno, že pro pacienty s vysokými stupni obezity neexistuje jiný dlouhodobě spolehlivější a účinnější způsob léčby obezity a k ní přidružených závažných onemocnění než bariatrická chirurgie. Chirurgická léčba je u indikovaných pacientů vysoce bezpečná a účinná metoda (více než 80 % pacientů redukuje > 40 % své nadváhy a hmotnostní úbytky si udrží po dobu 10 a více let).

Currently surgery (bariatric surgery, from the Greek „baros“, which means surgery of „heavy, large“ patients) belongs among the commonly accessible, safe and recognized basic and very successful proceedings in the treatment of severe forms of obesity. In the absolute majority of the obese patients the results of the surgical treatment are long term, lasting and lead to significant weight decrease. It was proven that for patients with high degree of obesity another more reliable in the long term and more effective way of treatment of obesity and its accompanying diseases than the bariatric surgery does not exist. For the indicated patients surgical treatment is a highly safe and effective method (more than 80 % of the patients have a reduction of > 40 % of their overweight and the weight decrease lasts for the period of 10 and more years).
