In this article I shall deal with the topic of effort in the context of sport. This topic will be discussed from two different perspectives, namely from Western and Eastern 2 points of view. First, the topic will be discussed in the context of Western society, in which exerting effort is understood as the appropriate approach to living one's life, while the absence of exertion is often understood as laziness, a lack of motivation, or apathy toward life. This way of thinking vastly influences the Western idea of how sport practice should be conducted, that is, with the exertion of a great deal of effort. But this approach is not the only one. From the point of view of the Eastern context, specifically Japanese martial paths (budo) that have been vastly influenced by Zen Buddhism, it will be shown that it may also be meaningful to base sport practice on effortlessness.
