Document type Comparative Study

The purpose of this study was to: examine the development of somatic indices and physical performances in current 10 - 19 year old Czech young people by the selected motor abilities tests, and to compare their results with those of their counterparts of 13 years ago; investigate the association between the participation in sport and physical activity and physical performance. A quota sample of 4199, 10 – 19 year old boys and girls were administered the COMPASS questionnaire (Coordinated Monitoring of Physical Activities and Sports) focused on frequency, organization in sport clubs and participation in sport competitions. Somatic characteristics: the body height, weight and three skin folds were measured. The physical performance of respondents was evaluated by four motor abilities tests selected from the European physical test battery (EUROFIT) in all age groups: the standing broad jump, sit-ups per 60 s, endurance shuttle run and 4 x 10 m shuttle run (boys and girls up to 14 year old), bent-arm hang (girls older than 15 years), or pull ups (boys older than 15 years) were assessed. The results confirmed the increase of body fat and the decrease of physical fitness during the last thirteen years. The dynamic endurance – strength ability of abdominal and iliopsoas muscles the (sit-ups per 60s) was an exception. The biggest decrease was found in the aerobic ability of young people (20m shuttle run). The lower performance in this test corresponds to the low involvement of today’s young people in sport and physical activities and their higher participation in sedentary activities. Positive links between the levels of participation in sport through the cohorts of COMPASS categories and physical performances in spite of a different speed of physical development in respondents in all applied motor abilities tests were identified
