V rámci spolupráce s WHO sleduje NRL pro enteroviry SZÚ cirkulaci poliovirů/enterovirů v odpadních vodách, které se odebírají v 8 městech Čech a Moravy a 3 utečeneckých táborech. Odběr a zpracování odpadních vod probíhá podle metodiky WHO. Při nálezu poliovirů v odpadní vodě je izolovaný kmen zaslán do Regionální referenční laboratoře (RRL) Helsinky a jsou informovány příslušné orgány v ČR. V RRL určí, zda se jedná o kmen vakcinální, od vakcinálního odvozený (derivovaný), případně divoký.

In cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Reference Laboratory for Enteroviruses of the National Institute of Public Health monitors the circulation of polioviruses/enteroviruses in sewage sampled in eight Czech and Moravian cities and in three refugee camps. Sewage sampling and sample processing are performed according to the WHO guidelines. When a poliovirus is detected from sewage, the strain recovered is reported to the respective authorities of the Czech Republic and referred to the Regional Reference Laboratory (RRL) in Helsinki. This RRL is able to differentiate between vaccine, vaccine-derived, or wild poliovirus strains.
