Postavenie chirurga v liečbe peptických vredov sa za posledných 20 rokov výrazne zmenilo. So zavedením veľmi účinnej medikamentóznej liečby sa elektívne operácie takmer vytratili a sú indikované len u malej skupiny pacientov. Počet urgentných operácií zostáva rovnaký a stále je spojený s mortalitou okolo 8 %.

During the past 20 years the surgeon's role in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease has changed dramatically. Since the introduction of novel medical treatment options, elective ulcer surgery has almost disappeared. Nevertheless, the number of emergency surgery is still the same and mortality remained about 8 %.
