Sterilita a infertilita sú dnes závažným medicínskym a celospoločenským problémom. Stúpa počet spontánnych potratov a pribúda nejasných prípadov tzv. unexplained infertility. 2 - 5 % žien je postihnutých opakovanými potratmi. Na väčšine prípadov sa podieľajú genetické, hormonálne, anatomické a infekčné faktory. V zostávajúcich prípadoch sa predpokladajú porušené imunologické mechanizmy. V súvislosti so zvýšenou incidenciou autoimunitných ochorení a vyšším výskytom subklinických a preklinických stavov autoimunity vznikla hypotéza syndrómu autoimunitného zlyhania. Do reprodukčných procesov môžu zasahovať aj antifosfolipidové protilátky.

Sterility and infertility is a serious medical and social problem. The number of spontaneous miscarriages has been increasing as well as the number of obscure cases of s. c. „unexplained infertility“. 2 - 5 % of women is afflicted by recurrent miscarriages. Genetic, hormonal, anatomical and infectious factors are involved in most cases. In the rest of cases impaired immunological mechanisms are supposed to take a part. Considering higher incidence of autoimmune diseases and higher incidence of subclinical and preclinical autoimmunity conditions there is a hypothesis of autoimmune failure syndrome. Antiphospholipid antibodies can also intervene into the reproductive process.
