Výrazný nárast ochorení respiračného systému viedol k tomu, že do popredia záujmu lekárov sa dostávajú otázky etiológie a patogenézy dvoch najčastejších chronických respiračných ochorení, a to chronickej obštrukčnej choroby pľúc a astmy bronchiale. Významný pokrok prinieslo pochopenie bunkových a molekulárnych mechanizmov. Obidve ochorenia sú charakterizované obštrukciou dýchacích ciest a chronickým zápalovým procesom, ale druh zápalu (bunkový mechanizmus, mediátory), výsledný účinok zápalu a odpoveď na farmakoterapiu zreteľne odlišujú astmu bronchiale od chronickej obštrukčnej choroby pľúc.

The significant increase of prevalence of respiratory diseases causes doctor´s increasing interest in questions of aetiology and pathogenesis of the two most common chronic respiratory diseases - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma. The understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms of these diseases has led to significant progress. Both diseases are characterized by airflow obstruction and chronic inflammatory process, but the type of inflammation (cellular mechanisms, mediators), the resulting effect of inflammation and response to pharmacotherapy markedly differ bronchial asthma from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
