Generická a originální léčiva jsou ve všech evropských zemích velice rozšířena. Originální léčiva přinášejí inovace a nové možnosti terapie. Generická léčiva přinášejí možnosti léčení vyššího počtu pacientů díky nižší ceně. Vzájemná koexistence obou skupin léčiv je důležitá zejména pro veřejné zdravotnické rozpočty. S identifikací, která léčiva jsou generiky, může však být v některých zemích problém, neboť není snadné získat příslušné informace. Přesto však jsou léčiva obsahující totožnou léčivou látku v dané síle a v obdobné lékové formě substituována. I v případě, že jsou příslušná léčiva orginálem a generikem, je třeba opatrnosti při jejich substituci, zejména jedná-li se o léčiva obsahující léčivou látku problémovou z hlediska farmakokinetických vlastností a současně s úzkým terapeutickým oknem.

Mutual co-existence of both classes of drugs is particularly important for public health budgets. In some cases there is a problem to ascertain whethe r particular medicinal product is generic or original, because it is not easy to obtain relevant information. However, the medicaments comprising an identical active substance in a given amount of active ingredient in one tablet and in similar dosage form are widely substituted. Even if these are relevant orginal and generic drugs, be cautious in their substitution, especially in the case of medicines containing the active substan ce which is problematic in terms of pharmacokinetic properties and at the same time the drugs have only a narrow therapeutic window.
