Národní lékařská knihovna (dále jen NLK) se šedou literaturou zabývá již od svého založení. Šedou literaturou se v oboru knihovnictví označují dokumenty, které nejsou distribuovány běžným knižním trhem. Hlavními producenty šedé literatury jsou lékařské odborné společnosti, pořadatelé konferencí, vysoké lékařské a zdravotnické školy, výzkumné organizace, ústavy AV ČR, pacientská sdružení apod. V NLK je šedá literatura zastoupená například těmito typy dokumentů: závěrečné grantové zprávy, vysokoškolské kvalifikační práce a disertace, doporučené postupy, směrnice, výroční zprávy, adresáře, atestační práce, informační letáky pro pacienty a brožury, letáky, sborníky z konferencí. Celkem se jedná přibližně o 13 tisíc dokumentů. Při získávání šedé literatury se v NLK klade důraz na bohemikální dokumenty, a to jak v tištěné, tak v elektronické podobě. Zpracování šedé literatury se řídí stejnými pravidly jako u běžně publikované. Používají se katalogizační pravidla RDA (Resource Description and Access) a formát Marc 21. Věcné hledisko je zachyceno deskriptory MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), Obory NLK a skupinou Konspektu. Bibliografické záznamy šedé literatury se pravidelně zasílají do databáze NUŠL (Národní úložiště šedé literatury). Využití šedé literatury se neliší od ostatní literatury. Pouze v případech, kdy je do NLK získán pouze jeden exemplář, je možné pouze jeho prezenční využití. Z hlediska dlouhodobé ochrany jsou tyto dokumenty reformátovány do elektronické podoby. Podchycení veškeré vycházející šedé literatury v ČR v oboru lékařství a zdravotnictví je prakticky nereálné. Velkou výhodou je, pokud samotní producenti šedé literatury automaticky šedou literaturu do NLK zasílají. NLK tak zajistí jejich dlouhodobé a trvalé uchování.

The National Medical Library has been interested in gray literature since its establishment. In the field of librarianship, the term gray literature identifies documents which are not distributed by the usual book market. In the NML the gray literature is mainly represented by the following types of documents: final grant reports, theses, guidelines, annual reports, directories, attestation works, information leaflets, pamphlets and brochures for patients, and conference proceedings. Altogether, the gray literature accounts to about 13 thousand documents in total. The NML puts emphasis on acquiring Bohemian documents, both in printed and electronic form. The main producers of gray literature are medical professional organizations, conference organizers, medical and nursing universities, research organizations, institutions of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and patient organizations. Processing of the gray literature is done using standard librarian rules of procedure. Namely, these are the cataloging rules RDA (Resource Description and Access) and the Marc 21 format. For indexing the MeSH descriptors (Medical Subject Headings), the Subject’s NML and the Conspectus are used. Bibliographic records of gray literature are sent to the NRGL (National Repository of Grey Literature) database on regular basis. The using of gray literature does not differ from other literature. In case the NML possesses a single copy, only in-house use of the copy is available to users. Due to the long-term preservation and protection of the gray literature, the documents are being converted to electronic form. Due to its nature, it is not possible to collect all Bohemian gray literature regarding the field of health and medicine. The task of collecting is made more manageable if the producers send their gray literature automatically to the NML, so that it can ensure their long-term preservation and protection.
