Hypotyreóza je nejčastější funkční poruchou štítné žlázy. Základní terapií hypotyreózy je jednoduchá substituce chybějících hormonů levotyroxinem. I tato léčba má svá specifika, například v graviditě, u pacientů s kardiovaskulárním onemocněním, u starších pacientů či po operaci karcinomu štítné žlázy. Vzácně se vyskytuje centrální hypotyreóza, která se léčí stejně jako periferní, ale je třeba pamatovat na to, že bývá spojena s deficity dalších hypofyzárních hormonů.

However, this treatment is different in some specific situations, for example in pregnancy, in patients with cardiovascular disease, in elderly or in patients after surgery for thyroid cancer. Rarely, central hypothyroidism occurs, it is treated as well as peripheral. It should be remembered that it is often associated with other pituitary hormones deficits.
