Probiotické mikroorganismy jsou živé buňky, které při podávání v dostatečném množství, přinášejí konzumentům zdravotní benefity. Nejčastějšími zástupci probiotik jsou bakterie mléčného kvašení a bifidobakterie, ale také zástupci sporulujících druhů rodu Bacillus a Clostridium, E. coli či kvasinky Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii. Článek shrnuje vývoj koncepce probiotik, jejich současné definice a zařazení a definici nových termínů v této oblasti, jako jsou postbiotika, parabiotika a psychobiotika a rovněž pojednává o nové nomenklatuře původního rodu Lactobacillus.

Probiotic microorganisms are living cells which, when administered in sufficient quantities, bring health benefits to consumers. The most common representatives of probiotics are lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria, but also representatives of sporulating species of the genera Bacillus and Clostridium, E. coli or the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii. The article summarizes the development of the concept of probiotics, their current definitions and classification, and the definition of new terms in this field, such as postbiotics, parabiotics and psychobiotics. The new nomenclature of the original genus Lactobacillus is also disscussed.
