Streptococcus suis je na celom svete rozšírený zvierací patogén, vyvolávajúci rôzne závažné ochorenia najmä u prasiat. Od konca 60. rokov sú referované prípady humánnych, prevažne profesionálnych infekcií. V kazuistike rozoberáme zvláštnosti prvého popísaného prípadu meningitídy zapríčinenej Streptococcus suis typ 2 na Slovensku. Túto zoonózu sme diagnostikovali u 53ročného agronóma, ktorý sa poranil pri zabíjačke. Ochorenie sa vyznačovalo ťažkým, protrahovaným priebehom napriek adekvátnej antibiotickej liečbe. Pomcha sluchu a vestibulámeho aparátu, ktoré sú charakteristické a popisované v literatúre, sme pozorovali aj u nášho pacienta. Taktiež sme zaznamenali v literatúre citované problémy s etiologickou diagnostikou, ktoré sú príčinou toho, že ochorenie sa nemusí diagnostikovať u ludí v krajinách, kde je výskyt Streptococcus suis bežný.

Streptococcus suis is a worldwide spread, animal pathogen that provokes a number of serious diseases, especially in swine. Since the end of 1960's, cases of human (mostlv professional) infections have been referred to. A discussion of the character of the first case of meningitis caused by Streptococcus suis type 2 reported in Slovakia is presented in the case report. This zoonose was diagnosed in a 53-year-old agronomist who injured himself during a pig-slaughtering. The disease was characterized by a serious, protracted course in spite of an adequate treatment with antibiotics. A hearing defect and disorders in a function of the vestibular apparatus, that is normally described in the literature and is considered to be characteristic of the disease, was observed. The problems conceming the etiologic diagnosis described in the literature were also encountered. They are responsible for the fact that the disease can be difficult to diagnose in human individuals in the countries where Streptococcus suis commonly occurs.
