Dílo obsahující soubor prohlášení, instrukcí nebo principů, které představují současná nebo budoucí pravidla a politiku. Směrnice jsou tvořeny vládními agenturami různé úrovně, institucemi, organizacemi, odbornými společnostmi, správními radami nebo panely expertů. Může se jednat o souvislý text nebo o osnovu a směrnice jsou obecně koncipované jako průvodce určitým problémem či přístupem v rámci disciplíny nebo výkonu. Mohou být obecné, ale také se mohou zabývat konkrétními rozhodnutími a nemocemi (směrnice pro lékařskou praxi).
