Although the identification of animal species and muscles have been reported previously, no studies have been found on the use of NIR spectroscopy to identify individual animals from the analysis of commercial meat cuts. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a portable near infrared (NIR) instrument combined with classical chemometrics methods [principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis PLS-DA)] to identify the origin of individual goat animals using the spectral signature of their commercial cut. Samples were collected from several carcasses (6 commercial cuts x 24 animals) sourced from a commercial abattoir in Queensland (Australia). The NIR spectra of the samples were collected using a portable NIR instrument in the wavelength range between 950 and 1600 nm. Overall, the PLS-DA models correctly classify 82% and 79% of the individual goat samples using either the goat rack or loin cut samples, respectively. The study demonstrated that NIR spectroscopy was able to identify individual goat animals based on the spectra properties of some of the commercial cut samples analysed (e.g. loin and rack). These results showed the potential of this technique to identify individual animals as an alternative to other laboratory methods and techniques commonly used in meat traceability.

Using ergonomic orthopaedic chairs can address spinal issues, particularly HNP, due to their flexible and elastic properties. By achieving optimal ergonomic design, various positive aspects can be achieved, such as increasing work quality productivity and reducing the cost of injuries or accidents. This research demonstrates diverse product design approaches to enhance posture health ergonomics, address specific musculoskeletal disorder issues, and consider local needs and available materials. Rattan is a tropical vine widely used in the furniture industry and predominantly found in wooded areas such as Indonesia. This research combines market research, morphology, ergonomic study, concept selection, QFD, HoQ, stiffness test, and prototype review. The QFD method was chosen in this study due to its excellence in connecting consumer desires with the product development process. Data of respondents consist of 51 % of respondents were male, 49 % were female, 88 % were aged between 18 and 34 years old, and 10 % were aged between 35 and 54 years old. The approach of 6 stages of product design as the primary framework for developing our product such as: planning, concept development (concept screening, product morphology, concept selection), system-level design, detailed design, testing, refinement and launching. Based on the calculations using the HOQ, it is identified that the primary focus in designing the rattan-based orthopaedic seating, lies in the orthopaedic design that provides maximum comfort for the spine. The comparison results indicate that the stiffness level of rattan weaving is nearly like latex, with a similarity percentage of 89 %. Data analysis using the QFD method indicates that the primary priority aspect is the orthopaedic design, followed by the selection of quality materials, cost-effectiveness, versatility, and appealing design aspects. Rattan's superior air circulation provides comfort by preventing excessive heat accumulation, excellence in strength and durability, ensuring ease of lightweight modelling, and providing more sustainable material.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is an important factor driving mortality among dialysis patients. Angiotensin-II receptor blocker (ARB) has been effective similarly to angiotensin-converting enzymes (ACEs) but with a low incidence of side effects. METHODOLOGY: The meta-analysis included all published studies that investigated the effect of ARB on the hypertension in adult dialysis patients (≥18 years). Data extraction was guided by a predetermined checklist. Data sources of the retrieved studies were PubMed, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, SCOPUS, Cochrane, Web of knowledge, and Google Scholar were systematically searched until February 2023. Using the RevMan 5 software, the mean difference for systolic and diastolic BP (SBP and DBP) and the risk ratio (RR) of the adverse events (AEs) were pooled from the selected studies. The random-effects model was used to compare the difference in the pre-and post-dialysis of the SBP and DBP. Data analyses were performed from December 2022 to February 2023. The primary outcome was the reduction in SBP and DBP in dialysis hypertensive patients who were on anti-hypertensive agents, and the secondary outcome was assessment of AE associated with the drug after dialysis (PROSPERO Registration: CRD42022355369). RESULTS: The initial search yielded 1,679 records, of which 84 studies underwent full-text evaluation, which identified 13 studies and 1,462 patients. The pooled standard MD for losartan with other anti-hypertensive agents, where the pre-dialysis SBP was 0.17 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.21-0.55) and the post-dialysis was 0.35 (95% CI: -0.17-1.02); yet, both are statistically non-significant, implies that there was no difference between Losartan and ARB drugs regarding the effect on the SBP. Diastolic BP for predialysis was -0.01 (95% CI: -0.65-0.63) and post-dialysis was 0.03 (95% CI: -0.24-0.30) and statistically non-significant. AEs by the ARB agents were lower compared to other anti-antihypertensive agents (relative risk [RR]: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.59-1.75) and statistically non-significant. CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis of RCT demonstrated that ARB and other anti-hypertensive medications had similar impacts on the treatment of hypertension.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Skeletal muscle is characterized by its mass, strength and performance. These normative values are pivotal in defining sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is associated with poor outcome of numerous medical and surgical conditions. This study aimed to establish normative benchmarks for skeletal muscle mass, strength and performance within the context of the Asian (Indian) population. METHODS: Our investigation utilized the computed tomography (CT) skeletal muscle index (SMI), handgrip strength (HGS), gait velocity and chair-stand test to construct reference values for muscle characteristics in the Indian population. RESULTS: The SMI analysis incorporated 1485 cases of acute abdomen (54.7%) males). The calculated SMI (kg/m2) was 38.50 (35.05-42.30) in males and 36.30 (32.20-41.20) in females (p = 0.510). The study also involved 3083 healthy individuals (67.6% males) evaluated for muscle strength and performance between August 2017 and August 2018. Notably, HGS (kg force) was recorded at 34.95 (26.50-43.30) in males and 25.50 (18.60-31.20) in females (p < 0.001). Gait velocity (metres/second) exhibited values of 1.25 (1.04-1.56) in males and 1.24 (1.03-1.56) in females (p = 0.851). Additionally, chair-stand test (seconds) results were 10.00 (9.00-13.00) in males and 12.00 (10.00-14.00) in females (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The investigation determined that males had greater muscle strength and performance than females. But gender wise, there was no significant difference in muscle mass. Interestingly, our population's muscle parameters were consistently lower compared to western literature benchmarks. These normative values will help to define sarcopenia parameters in our population, which have prognostic value in multiple ailments.

The excellent survival rate of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) exceeding 90% is reduced by the presence of nodal metastases by over 50%. We analysed various risk parameters of cSCC to predict the incidence of nodal metastases. A total of 118 patients with the head cSCC were included in a single-institution retrospective study covering the period from 2008 to 2020. Tumour recurrence, temple location, and tumour infiltration depth were found to be independent predictors of nodal metastases (increasing the probability of metastases by 8.0, 8.1, and 4.3 times, respectively). Furthermore, univariate analysis shows that the tumour size and T stage are significant factors increasing the risk of metastases. Several independent risk factors for the development of metastases in the head cSCC have been confirmed. These findings might help identify at-risk patients who require additional attention for adequate radical treatment and close follow-up. In contrast, elective treatment of lymph nodes is not recommended due to the low incidence of regional metastases.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) are malignant tumours with excellent prognosis unless nodal metastases develop. The aim of our study is to determine the prognostic significance of the clinical stage of parotid gland metastases and the incidence of occult cervical lymph node involvement in cSCC of the head. Our retrospective analysis includes 39 patients with cSCC parotid gland metastases, 15 of whom had concurrent cervical node involvement. In 32 patients, the lymph nodes manifested at stage N3b. A total of 26 patients were treated with parotidectomy, 9 patients received radiotherapy alone, and 4 received symptomatic therapy. The surgical treatment included either total conservative (21 cases) or superficial parotidectomy (5 cases) and neck dissection (therapeutic neck dissections in 11 cases and elective in 14 cases). In all cases, surgery was performed with sufficient tumour-free resection margins. Adjuvant radiotherapy was administered postoperatively in 16 patients. Occult metastases were present in 21% of cases after an elective neck dissection, but not in any case in the deep lobe of the parotid gland. The five-year overall survival and recurrence-free interval were 52% and 55%, respectively. Patients with the cN3b stage and G3 histological grade tend to have a worse prognosis, but not at a statistically significant level. The prognosis was not worse in patients with concurrent parotid and cervical metastases compared to those with metastases limited to the parotid gland only. The addition of adjuvant irradiation, in comparison to a single modality surgical treatment, was the only statistically significant prognostic factor that reduced the risk of death from this diagnosis (p=0.013). The extent of parotidectomy (partial vs. total) had no impact on either the risk of recurrence or patient prognosis. The combination of surgery with irradiation provides the best results and should be applied to all patients who tolerate the treatment. A partial superficial parotidectomy should be sufficient, with a minimum risk of occult metastasis in the deep lobe. Conversely, the relatively high incidence of occult neck metastases indicates that patients could likely benefit from elective neck dissection.
UNLABELLED: Many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of various plant extracts in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The phytochemical components of plant extracts contain biodegradable agents necessary for the stabilization and synthesis of nanoparticles. However, extracellular components of microorganisms have been shown to have similar activity in recent years. This study expects nanoparticle synthesis using silver nitrate using bacteria from different plant and soil parts in the Proteobacteria and Actinomycetes families in the endophytic and free form obtained from various sources, determining their antimicrobial properties on other pathogenic microorganisms. Nanoparticules showed a positive effect on antibiotic-resistant human pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus, Escherichia, and Acinetobacter), two strains of the human pathogenic Candida, and six different plant pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus, Fusarium, Gaeumannomyces, and Penicillium) compared to the reference antibiotics and antifungals. The physical forms and dimensions of the nanoparticles were determined by XRD, FTIR, UV-vis, and scanning electron microscopy. We believe that our findings will be the basis for the bacterial nanoparticle production procedures. CONTEXT: Ovarian carcinoma is a malignancy with the highest mortality among gynecological cancers. Mutations in BRCA1/2 genes are believed to be a favorable prognostic factor and that, in general, the biological behavior of ovarian cancer in BRCA-positive individuals differs from others. However, some clinically relevant issues (i.e., prediction of response to chemotherapy and treatment of platinum-resistant BRCA-positive patients) remain unclear. AIMS: (1) The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of germline BRCA mutations in unselected recurrent ovarian cancer patient population, (2) analyze whether biological behavior of BRCA-positive tumors differs from others, and (3) analyze the effect of platinum reinduction in platinum-resistant BRCA-positive patients. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This was a single-institution retrospective analysis. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Consecutive recurrent ovarian cancer patients from years 2012 to 2020 were included; their BRCA1/2 mutational status was analyzed and correlated with progression-free survival (PFS), type of treatment, and response to treatment. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Statistical significance of differences between and among patients was tested for continuous variables by the Mann-Whitney U-test or the Kruskal-Wallis test; a maximum likelihood Chi-square test was used for categorical variables. RESULTS: Two hundred and forty-three recurrent ovarian cancer patients were included. The median follow-up was 37 months. Pathogenic mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene was found in 18.1% of patients. There was no difference in PFS comparing BRCA-positive to BRCA-negative patients (median PFS: 10.2 vs. 10.1 months, P = 0.874); there was a difference in PFS comparing BRCA-negative versus BRCA-positive platinum-sensitive patients (9.4 vs. 14.3 months, P = 0.002). BRCA-positive platinum-resistant patients reinduced with platinum achieved a median PFS of 8 months (compared to those receiving nonplatinum treatment, median PFS: 4 months, P = 0.062). CONCLUSIONS: Germline BRCA mutations are not exclusive to platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer patients; even in platinum-resistant patients, mutation can be detected. We found no difference in PFS for platinum-sensitive BRCA-positive and BRCA-negative patients. Platinum reinduction may be considered for BRCA-positive platinum-resistant ovarian cancer patients to prolong PFS. Even these data describe only a small population, it supports the clinical practice of platinum-based chemotherapy use in platinum-resistant BRCA-positive patients.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a highly inherited disease that affects ~0.5% of the population. The genetic and environmental factors are involved in its aetiology and they interact with each other. Combination of symptoms is unique to each patient, the disease seriously interferes with the ability to function in society and affects the mental state of the patient. In most patients, the first manifestations of SZ appear during the adolescence or early adulthood. The hypothesis that SZ origin in impaired development of the nervous system is currently widely accepted. Some studies have identified several genetic and environmental factors that increase the risk of the disease manifestation, but none of them can be considered as the only cause of SZ. The genetics of the disease is complex and in last two decades it is assumed that the cryptic rearrangements could be one of its causes. Cryptic rearrangements (microdeletions and microduplications) are the chromosomal rearrangements smaller than 3-5 Mb. Their discovery was conditioned by the development of molecular genetic and molecular cytogenetic techniques. The aberrations affect one or more genes and change the gene dose. In this article, we present the rearrangements of the regions of human chromosomes more closely associated with the onset and development of SZ. Next, the candidate genes will be presented together with their inclusion in the context of theories trying to explain the origin of SZ through some important factors (e.g. action of dopamine or glutamate or GABA, formation of dendrites and neuronal synapses, etc.).
