INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Cytochrome P450 enzymes are the major drug-metabolizing enzymes in humans and the importance of drug transport proteins, in particular P-glycoprotein, in the variability of drug response has also been highlighted. Activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes and P-glycoprotein can vary widely between individuals and genotyping and/or phenotyping can help assess their activity. Several phenotyping cocktails have been developed. The Geneva cocktail is composed of a specific probe for six different cytochrome P450 enzymes and one for P-glycoprotein and was used in the context of a research aiming at exploring genotypes and phenotypes in distinct human populations (NCT02789527). The aim of the present study is to solely report the safety results of the Geneva cocktail in the healthy volunteers of these populations.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Geneva cocktail is composed of caffeine, bupropion, flurbiprofen, omeprazole, dextromethorphan, midazolam, and fexofenadine. The volunteers fasted and avoided drinking caffeine-containing beverages or food and grapefruit juice overnight before receiving the cocktail orally. They provided blood spots for the probes' concentrations at 2, 3, and 6 h after ingestion and were asked about adverse events. RESULTS: A total of 265 healthy adult volunteers were included from Ethiopia, Oman, and the Czech Republic. The mean plasma concentrations at the 2-h sampling time of each probe drug in the total sample were: 1663 ng/mL for caffeine, 8 ng/mL for bupropion, 789 ng/mL for flurbiprofen, 6 ng/mL for dextromethorphan, 2 ng/mL for midazolam, 35 ng/mL for fexofenadine, and 103 ng/mL for omeprazole. Four adverse events were observed representing an occurrence of 1.5%. All these events were categorized as mild to moderate, non-serious, and resolved spontaneously. A causal link with the cocktail cannot be excluded because of the temporal relationship but is at most evaluated as possible according to the World Health Organization-Uppsala Monitoring Centre causal assessment system. CONCLUSIONS: In this research, healthy volunteers from three different human populations were phenotyped with the Geneva cocktail. Four adverse events were observed, confirming the safety of this cocktail that is given at lower than clinically relevant doses and therefore results in concentrations lower than those reported to cause adverse events.

A new genus and species of the subfamily Cossoninae, Omanocossonus sabulosus gen. et sp. nov. is described from Oman. All specimens including larvae were found on sand dunes on the seashore in roots of Calotropis procera (Aiton) W.T. Aiton. The crucial features, including male and female terminalia, are illustrated, and the taxonomic position of the new genus within Cossoninae is briefly discussed. The generic status of Lindbergius Roudier, 1957 is resurrected. The mature larva of the new species is described, larval morphology is discussed and the current state of knowledge about immature stages of Cossoninae is summarized.

The material of the present checklist has been collected from the Iranian intertidal and shallow subtidal shores of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman from 2015 to 2019, in addition to re-examining all the materials deposited in the Zoological Museum of the University of Tehran. This checklist providing 16 new records for the Persian Gulf and 15 for the Gulf of Oman raised the number of recorded caridean shrimps to 109 and 49 for these gulfs, respectively. However, the actual number of these shrimps are higher than these numbers due to two facts. Firstly, most of the subtidal diverse ecosystems, e.g. coral reefs and seagrass bed have not been seriously investigated taxonomically. Secondly, there are some members of species complexes and probably some new species in the study which need to be carefully treated.

In the present work, we use an exceptional database including 5,359 records of 101 species of Oman's terrestrial reptiles together with spatial tools to infer the spatial patterns of species richness and endemicity, to infer the habitat preference of each species and to better define conservation priorities, with especial focus on the effectiveness of the protected areas in preserving this unique arid fauna. Our results indicate that the sampling effort is not only remarkable from a taxonomic point of view, with multiple observations for most species, but also for the spatial coverage achieved. The observations are distributed almost continuously across the two-dimensional climatic space of Oman defined by the mean annual temperature and the total annual precipitation and across the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the multivariate climatic space and are well represented within 17 out of the 20 climatic clusters grouping 10% of the explained climatic variance defined by PC1 and PC2. Species richness is highest in the Hajar and Dhofar Mountains, two of the most biodiverse areas of the Arabian Peninsula, and endemic species richness is greatest in the Jebel Akhdar, the highest part of the Hajar Mountains. Oman's 22 protected areas cover only 3.91% of the country, including within their limits 63.37% of terrestrial reptiles and 50% of all endemics. Our analyses show that large areas of the climatic space of Oman lie outside protected areas and that seven of the 20 climatic clusters are not protected at all. The results of the gap analysis indicate that most of the species are below the conservation target of 17% or even the less restrictive 12% of their total area within a protected area in order to be considered adequately protected. Therefore, an evaluation of the coverage of the current network of protected areas and the identification of priority protected areas for reptiles using reserve design algorithms are urgently needed. Our study also shows that more than half of the species are still pending of a definitive evaluation by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

A new species Adelostoma muqalensis sp. nov. is described from Oman, figured and compared with its relatives. The new species is placed in a new monotypic subgenus, Omandelostoma subgen. nov. An identification key for subgenera of the genus Adelostoma is given.
In the present study two new species of Tetragonocephalum Shipley et Hornell, 1905, T. mackenziei sp. n. and T. kazemii sp. n., are described from the spiral intestine of the cowtail stingray, Pastinachus sephen (Forsskål), from the northern coast of the Gulf of Oman. Tetragonocephalum mackenziei is distinguished from the 16 other valid species of Tetragonocephalum by a unique combination of characteristics, i.e. sperm-filled seminal receptacle in immature proglottids, body length (7.7-17.5 mm), body width (213-288 µm), number of proglottids (34-49), number of testes (10-14), size of scolex (228-315 µm × 213-288 µm) and size of acetabula (56-73 µm × 61-75 µm). Tetragonocephalum kazemii is morphologically distinguishable from its valid congeners and T. mackenziei based on a combination of characteristics, including body length (28.8-36.6 mm), number of proglottids (50-65), number of testes (30-42), size of scolex (388-564 µm × 326-448 µm), size of acetabula (62-86 µm × 57-90 µm) and testes (25-39 × 21-32). This brings the total number of validly described species of Tetragonocephalum to 18 and expands our knowledge of this diverse genus to now include the Gulf of Oman, as well as Arafura Sea, northern Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean.

Two new species of the genus Microcosmodes Strand, M. arabicus from Oman and M. persicus from Iran, are described, compared with related taxa, and their affinities are discussed. The species are very similar and belong to the same species group.

The genus Rhynchocalamus comprises three species distributed in Southwest Asia. Little is known about them, most probably because of their secretive fossorial lifestyle. The poor knowledge of the genus is even underscored by the fact that its phylogenetic affinities remained unclear until very recently. The least known of the species, Rhynchocalamus arabicus, is known only from the holotype collected in Aden, Yemen, and it has not been observed since its description in 1933. Here we provide a second record for this species, which represents the first record of this genus for Oman. This extends its range in southern Arabia by more than 1000 km. The observed specimen was determined as R. arabicus on the basis of its similarity in size, color, and scalation with the holotype. Furthermore, we sequenced three mitochondrial (12S, 16S, cytb) and one nuclear (cmos) genes for R. arabicus and for two individuals of R. melanocephalus and one R. satunini and inferred the phylogenetic relationships of all currently recognized species of the genus for the first time. The results of our phylogenetic analyses indicate that Rhynchocalamus is a member of the Western Palearctic clade of Colubrinae and is sister to Lytorhynchus, with which it forms a very well supported clade and shares some morphological characters. As our results show, R. satunini is the basal lineage of the genus and R. melanocephalus is sister to R. arabicus.
