Buddhist meditation practices, including Samadhi meditation, which forms the basis for mindfulness practice, are broadly promoted as pathways to wellbeing, but evidence of their adverse effects is emerging. In a single-group observational study with assessments of autonomic system before, during, and after Samadhi meditation, we explore the relationship between post-meditation nausea symptoms and the degree of change in autonomic system activity during meditation as compared to before and after in 57 university students (42 women; mean age = 22.6) without any previous experience in meditation or yoga practices. We hypothesize that nauseous feelings in meditation are connected to a rapid increase of activity in the sympathetic nervous system, as indicated by decreased heart-rate variability (HRV). We additionally explore links between meditation-induced nausea and two markers of parasympathetic activity: increased HRV and vasovagal syncope. Engaging in meditation and increased nausea during meditation were both associated with increased markers of HRV parasympathetic activity, but 12 individuals with markedly higher nausea demonstrated increased HRV markers of sympathetic activity during meditation. Vasovagal syncope was observed but found to be unrelated to nausea levels. Drivers of adverse effects of meditation in some individuals require further investigation.

Hypobaric hypoxemia represents a risk factor for body integrity and challenges its homeostasis. We examined whether practicing Maheshwarananda's modified bhujangini pranayama yoga breathing technique would influence hypobaric hypoxemia at an altitude of 3,650 m. An international randomized two-period, two-sequence crossover intervention study was conducted in September 2019 in the Himalayas. We compared 5-minute testing periods of pranayama breathing with normal resting breathing in 20 subjects divided randomly into two groups of 10 individuals; all had a daily practice of Maheshwarananda's modified bhujangini pranayama and were nonsmokers, lacto vegetarians, and alcohol abstainers. We measured the arterial saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2; our primary outcome variable), end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (EtCO2), respiratory rate, and heart rate at two altitudes: (1) 378 m (T0); and (2) 3,650 m (T1 = 2nd day, T2 = 4th day at the camp) immediately after finishing each testing period. We also monitored the presence of acute mountain sickness using the Lake Louise Scoring System. Mean SpO2 at 3,650 m increased right after the yoga breathing exercise from 88.60% to 90.35% at T1, and from 88.35% to 90.60% at T2 (T1 p = 0.007, T2 p = 0.004). No significant changes were observed in heart rate or EtCO2. The mean rate of normal control resting breathing was 13/min; the mean rate was 7/min during the yoga breathing. Right after Maheshwarananda's modified bhujangini pranayama hypobaric hypoxemia decreased as measured by SpO2, whereas EtCO2 and heart rate stayed comparable with the control resting breathing.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective observational study was to investigate the effects of a novel Wim Hof psychophysiological training program on stress responses and hormone release in healthy participants during an Antarctic expedition. METHODS: All members of an Antarctic expedition were included in the study. The participants were healthy volunteers allocated to an intervention group (n = 6) and a control group (n = 7). The intervention consisted of 8 weeks of Wim Hof training. The training program comprised three integrated parts: breathing exercises, cold exposure and meditation. Psychometric measures (the Beck Depression Inventory and the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40) and neuroendocrine measures (cortisol, melatonin) were assessed pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS: The results showed that the 8-week training program significantly reduced stress responses, as indicated by a reduction in depressive symptoms. A non-significant reduction in cortisol was also observed. CONCLUSIONS: These data constitute preliminary findings indicating that the Wim Hof Method may positively affect stress symptoms and adaptability of the hormonal system to respond adequately to the circadian rhythm in healthy volunteers who participated in an Antarctic expedition.
