V textu jsou popsány některé přístupy soudobé kvalitativní sociologie a je vysvětlena podstata kvalitativního výzkumu ve zdravotnictví. Jako příklad aplikace kvalitativních metod je uveden sociologický pohled na medicínské technologie. Ve třetí, hlavní části, je představeno několik sociologických studií diabetů, zabývajících se především otázkou, co to znamená žít s cukrovkou a jaké strategie lidé používají, aby si utvořili co nejlepší způsob svého „soužití" s nemocí. Závěrem jsou ukázány některé rozdíly v tomto smyslu mezi muži a ženami a mezi příslušníky různých etnik.

The text presents some methods of contemporary qualitative sociology and it gives on outline of basic principles of qualitative research in health care. As an example of a use of qualitative methods is presented a sociological perspective of medical technology. In the third part several sociological studies of diabetes are introduced. They mainly deal with the question what does it mean to live with a diabetes and which strategies patients use to create the best possible way of coexistence with the disease. Finally some differences between men and women and between members of different ethic groups are shown.
