Snakes have been important ambush predators of both primates and human hunter-gatherers throughout their co-evolutionary history. Viperid snakes in particular are responsible for most fatal venomous snakebites worldwide and thus represent a strong selective pressure. They elicit intense fear in humans and are easily recognizable thanks to their distinctive morphotype. In this study, we measured skin resistance (SR) and heart rate (HR) in human subjects exposed to snake pictures eliciting either high fear (10 venomous viperid species) or disgust (10 nonvenomous fossorial species). Venomous snakes subjectively evaluated as frightening trigger a stronger physiological response (higher SR amplitude) than repulsive non-venomous snakes. However, stimuli presented in a block (more intense stimulation) do not trigger a stronger emotional response compared to sequentially presented stimuli (less intense stimulation). There are significant interindividual differences as subjects with high fear of snakes confronted with images of viperid snakes show stronger, longer-lasting, and more frequent changes in SR and higher HR compared to low-fear subjects. Thus, we show that humans demonstrate a remarkable ability to discriminate between dangerous viperids and harmless fossorial snakes, which is also reflected in distinct autonomous body responses.

Analyses of user experience in the electronic entertainment industry currently rely on self-reporting methods, such as surveys, ratings, focus group interviews, etc. We argue that self-reporting alone carries inherent problems-mainly the misinterpretation and temporal delay during longer experiments-and therefore, should not be used as a sole metric. To tackle this problem, we propose the possibility of modeling consumer experience using psychophysiological measures and demonstrate how such models can be trained using machine learning methods. We use a machine learning approach to model user experience using real-time data produced by the autonomic nervous system and involuntary psychophysiological responses. Multiple psychophysiological measures, such as heart rate, electrodermal activity, and respiratory activity, have been used in combination with self-reporting to prepare training sets for machine learning algorithms. The training data was collected from 31 participants during hour-long experiment sessions, where they played multiple video-games. Afterwards, we trained and compared the results of four different machine learning models, out of which the best one produced ∼96% accuracy. The results suggest that psychophysiological measures can indeed be used to assess the enjoyment of digital entertainment consumers.

Research based on self-reported data often indicates that women are the more emotional sex. The present study examined differences in emotion between the sexes across two components of the emotional process: subjective experience and physiological reactions to emotional stimuli. During the experimental study, participants (N=124; 22.5±2.88; 51 males) subjectively rated their emotional experience (valence and intensity) towards presented positive and negative affective stimuli, while physiological reactions (facial electromyography, heart rate, skin conductance, and finger skin temperature) were measured during expositions. Results from self-reports suggest that women declared more intensive emotional experiences for positive and negative stimuli and rated negative stimuli as more negative in comparison to men. Physiological measurements showed differences between the sexes in the physiological baseline measurements (facial electromyography, skin conductance and finger skin temperature). However, physiological responses towards positive or negative emotional stimuli did not prove to be different between men and women, except for finger skin temperature. Relations between self-reported subjective experiences and physiological changes were weak and insignificant. Collectively, our findings suggest certain emotional differences experienced between men and women. These differences can be found specifically in self-reported subjective experiences, while significant differences were not predominantly present in recorded physiological reactions.

According to recent findings, interhemispheric interactions and information connectivity represent crucial mechanisms used in processing information across various sensory modalities. To study these interactions, the authors measured bilateral electrodermal activity (EDA) in 33 psychiatric outpatients. The results show that, during congruent Stroop stimuli in hypnosis, the patients with higher hypnotizability manifest a decreased level of interhemispheric information transfer measured by pointwise transinformation (PTI) that was calculated from left and right EDA records. These results show that specific shifts of attentional focus during hypnosis are related to changes of interhemispheric interactions that may be reflected in neural connectivity calculated from the bilateral EDA measurement. This attentional shift may cause dissociated attentional control disturbing integrative functions of consciousness and contextual experiences.

Introduction: Sympathetic skin response (SSR) is a simple and widely available test of sudomotor functions. Afferent part of this polysynaptic reflex is variable, while the efferent direction of the reflex arch is via thin unmyelinated C fibres. No reliable study of the SSR diagnostic validity in patients with sensory small fiber neuropathy (SFN) has so far been published. In clinical practice, however, we repeatedly meet patients, who have been diagnosed with SFN based solely on abnormal SSR. The aim of the study was to evaluate diagnostic validity of SSR in patients with sensory small fibre neuropathy. Methods: SSR was recorded from palms and soles of 69 patients with painful sensory neuropathy (33 of them with pure SFN and 36 with mixed small and large nerve fibre dysfunction) using electrical stimulation and inspiratory gasp stimuli. Small nerve fiber involvement was confirmed by reduced intraepidermal nerve fiber densities in skin biopsy samples of all cases. The results were compared with those of 89 healthy controls. The outcome for health controls were also used to establish age-stratified normative data. We assessed electric stimuli and sudden inspiration response recall end their reproducibility, amplitude and latency. Results: Both the SSR latencies and amplitudes showed very low diagnostic validity in small fibre neuropathy patients. The absence of SSR response represented the most reliable abnormality. However, using this parameter, dysfunction of small autonomic nerve fibres has only been found in a small part of our sensory neuropathy patients: sensitivity did not exceed 10% in pure SFN patients and 33% in those with mixed small and large nerve fibre dysfunction (where more pronounced small sensory nerve fibre involvement has previously been found). Conclusion: Considering its low sensitivity, SSR should not be used as the only test to confirm sensory small fibre neuropathy. The authors declare they have no potential conflicts of interest concerning drugs, products, or services used in the study. The Editorial Board declares that the manuscript met the ICMJE “uniform requirements” for biomedical papers.

AIMS: To assess the use of skin conductance as an objective measure of pain in infants of different gestational age. A secondAIM was to investigate the relationship between skin conductivity and selected physiological and behavioural variables (oxygen saturation, heart rate and behavioural state). METHODS: Infants were divided according to gestational age into the following 3 groups; group A: 25+0-31+6 weeks (13 infants), group B: 32+0-35+6 weeks (25 infants), group C: 36+0-41+6 weeks (19 infants). The pain stimulus was blood sampling. RESULTS: The most sensitive parameter for describing changes in skin conductance related to pain was peak per second. No other parameter correlated with the physiological variables chosen. The results showed that the inability to determine basal skin conductance is a crucial disadvantage to practical application. The lack of correlation between conductance parameters and gestational age is surprising. CONCLUSION: We conclude that the Peak per Second is the best parameter for evaluating skin conductance in infants and it is not influenced by gestational age. Peaks per Second correlate only with Prechtl's Scale of behavioural state and not with the physiological parameters chosen.

Zjistili jsme statisticky významné rozdíly v analgetickém účinku některých typů a koncentrací cukerných roztoků.
Background: In the prevention of procedural pain in neonates of all gestational categories mainly sugar solutions of different types and concentrations are used. Even though this method studying the effect of sugar solutions in concentrations from 5 to 66% has been certified by series of works, no gold standard has been established. An alternative to the use of sugar solutions is breast milk or sensory saturation (complex effect on sensory perceptions of the child). Methods: In the present paper, we evaluated parameters of electrical skin conductance (ESC) in a group of full-term or near-term infants in a well-defined painful complaint, which was capillary blood sampling for mandatory screening. Results and conclusion: We evaluated the effectiveness of four different concentrations of sugar solutions, widely available and used in clinical practice. We have shown that there are statistically significant differences between genders in selected parameters of the electrical conductivity of the skin as well as differences in the change of character behavior in response to a painful stimulus. We found statistically significant differences in the analgesic effect of certain types and concentrations of sugar solutions.

Recent findings indicate that neural mechanisms of consciousness are related to integration of distributed neural assemblies. This neural integration is particularly vulnerable to past stressful experiences that can lead to disintegration and dissociation of consciousness. These findings suggest that dissociation could be described as a level of neural disintegration reflecting a number of independent processes by means of neural complexity. In the present study measurement of dissociation, traumatic stress symptoms and neural complexity calculated using nonlinear analysis of EEG [during rest conditions], and electrodermal activity (EDA) [during rest and Stroop task] were performed in 52 university students (mean age 24.1). Neural complexity has been described using pointwise correlation dimension (PD2) calculated from EEG and EDA records. While no significant relationship was found between EEG complexity and dissociative symptoms, statistically significant relationship between EDA complexity and dissociative symptoms during rest, but not during the Stroop task, has been found. These results indicate that electrodermal complexity during rest may reflect a level of dissociative symptoms.
