To demonstrate the existence of a common site of integration in independent tumour clones, restriction mapping of the vicinity of integrated MAV-2 proviruses in nephroblastoma DNA was performed, using Southern hybridization with an MAV-2 specific probe U3(pAT). The results have shown that (1) nephroblastomas are of semiclonal origin. (2) Nephroblastoma cells contain an average of 5 clonally located integrated proviruses per diploid genome; they do not contain any detectable amount of non-integrated proviruses. (3) In the DNA from independent nephroblastoma clones, there appear at an increased frequency Tth111I fragments of 14.6 and 17.8 kb that hybridize with the U3(pAT) probe. Considering a random selection of integration sites, such coincidence is of little probability. Thus we suppose that these fragments represent a common site(s) of integration with an MAV-2 proviral insert. Two hypotheses concerning possible mechanisms of nephroblastoma induction are discussed: proto-oncogene insertional activation and anti-oncogene insertional inactivation.

15-minute forced movement of pigs evoked after 18 to 24 hours an increase in the activity of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase and in the level of non-esterified fatty acids in blood serum. The changes in the enzyme activity following muscular strain were individual. The pig group with higher average weight gains, fed the diet containing 284 g of crude protein per 1 kg, showed greater differences in the muscular enzymatic activity than the animals with lower weight gains, fed the diet containing 260 g crude protein per 1 kg. Single administration of vitamin E (six hours before strain) did not subdue the elution of enzymes from tissues after muscular strain. Another important strain factor was the fixation of pigs by trying them outside their own group.

Analyses of the DNA polymerase present in the inner mitochondrial membrane and matrix fraction of the mitochondria isolated from Rous sarcoma cells and chick embryo cells, and in the lysate of Rous sarcoma virus were performed, using a modification of the thin-layer gel filtration on Sephadex G-150 superfine. The method allowed the simultaneous determination of the molecular weight of the isolated enzymes. In the mitochondria or Rous sarcoma cells an RNA-directed DNA polymerase, activated by poly(rA): oligo (dT) synthetic duplex, was detected, with the same molecular weight as the reverse transcriptase isolated from Rous sarcoma virus. Such enzyme was not found in the mitochondria of chick embryo cells.

Two experiments with 56 piglets and pilot trial on 84 piglets were performed to demonstrate that it is possible to replace the complete mixture for early piglet weaning (COS-1, or COS-2) by an experimental mixture without fish meal, with a higher proportion of soya and maize, supplemented by lysine and methionine; this mixture is to be fed to piglets in the weaning period. The weight gain dropped in both basic experiments after weaning, especially in the group with a higher content of nitrogenous matters in the diet. No significant inter-group differences were found in the activity of enzymes in serum and in liver, nor were they found in the adrenocortical activity.
