Sepse představuje jednu z nevážnějších komplikací u nemocných v intenzivní péči, která je spojena s vysokou mortalitou a morbiditou kriticky nemocných. Dosud neexistuje jednoznačná strategie léčby. Jediným opatřením zůstává účinná prevence. Mnoha výzkumy byl prokázán význam jistých preventivních opatření, které mohou snížit výskyt sepse na pracovištích intenzivní péče. Mezi tato opatření patří i včasná nutriční podpora nemocných. Pro lékaře představuje výživa pojem vědecký, výzkumný. Role sestry je především v technickém zajištění výživy, sledování stavu výživy a výskytu komplikací s ní spojených.

Sepsis is one of the severest complications of patients on intensive care which is connected with a high mortality and morbidity of critically ill patients. There has not been found an explicit treatment strategy until now. The only precaution is an effective prevention. There were a lot of researches on several preventive precautions which could reduce the occurance of sepsis on the departments of intensive care. These were evaluated as very signifficant. One of the preventive precautions is a well timed nutritive support of the patients. The physicians regard nutrition as an academic and investigative term. The role of nurses technically lies in providing and following the status of nutrition as well as of the complications occurrence which are closely connected with it.
