Nurse intervention in conduction hypotermia in patients with bacterial meningitis

Bacterial meningitis despite today’s effective and more affordable antimicrobial drugs remains a significant problem. Despite treatment according to all the principles of intensive care, even in the most developed countries, the lethality of bacterial meningitis, and especially pneumococcal meningitis, is still high and amounts to 34%. Typically this is a serious disease that is directly life-threatening to patients or leaves severe neurological deficits after recovery. It is vital to start timely antimicrobial therapy, as well as complex supportive and symptomatic therapy. One of the potential possibilities of additional benefits for such patients is the use of therapeutic hypothermia. In our Clinic for Infectious Diseases "Dr.Fran Mihaljević" in Zagreb, therapeutic hypothermia has been performed since 2005 and demandes a very high degree of education and sensibility from the nurse in order to perform complex nursing interventions in patients and thus contribute to improved disease outcome.
