Biologické zbraně byly dlouhá léta světovým společenstvím vnímány jen jakési potenciální zlo. Zásadní změnu v pohledu na jejich reálnou hrozbu znamenal teprve promyšlený zločinný útok na Spojené státy americké dne 11. září 2001. Bylo v logice této události, že se publicisté všech typů médií dožadovali na představitelích státní správy České republiky odpovědi, jak je naše země na tento druh nebezpečí připravena. Jejich reakce byly rozpačité a svým způsobem odrážejí určitý chaos spojený s reorganizací armády, ale současně i nepřipravenost civilní obrany. Do jisté míry to vše lze chápat jako důsledek zásadní transformace naší společnosti a snad svým způsobem tedy i omluvit. Nicméně je zřejmé, že ani nejvyspělejší země nemají zcela jasno v otázce obrany před děsivostí dopadu biologických zbraní. Dokladem je následující materiál věnovaný předmětné problematice v USA, ktery" z větší části přetiskujeme z letošního červnového čísla prestižního periodika The New England Journal of Medicine.
Biological weapons were conceived for years by the world community only as a potential evil. A fundamental change of opinions regarding their real menace occurred only after the premeditated criminal attack on the USA on September 11; 2001. Their reactions were hesitant and in a way reflect a certain chaos associated with the reorganization of the army and at the same time unpreparedness of civil defence. To a certain extent all this can be conceived as the consequence of the fundamental transformation of our society and thus it may be excused to a certain extent. Nevertheless it is obvious tkat not even the most advanced countries are quite clear as regards defence against the horror of Biological weapons. Evidence to this effect is the following document, devoted to the problem in the USA, major parts of which we reproduce from the prestigious periodical The England Journal of Medicine.
