Fatigue has a great influence on running technique. Most of the research into neuro-muscular fatigue uses treadmill running. As athletic competitions take place on stadium tracks and similar synthetic surfaces, the purpose of this study was to determine how neuro-muscular fatigue forces the athletes to change their track running technique. Eight subjects participated in the study. They run 3000 m on a 400 m synthetic surface track. 3D kinematic, blood lactat concentration, and contact times were obtained for the first and the last lap of running. For statistic analysis a Paired-samples T-test was used. With the onset of neuro-muscular fatigue the subjects increased the range of movement in the knee and ankle joints during grand contact, reduced the stride frequency and increased the ground contact time. The observed changes in running technique represent the runner’s adaptation to the reduced ability to develop muscle stiffness when neuro-muscular fatigue builds up.
