V tomto článku se autorky vracejí k historii geriatrie v České republice a reflektují vývoj v posledním roce. Ještě na počátku roku 2009 nebyla geriatrie zahrnuta do seznamu základních oborů. Tato situace se naštěstí velmi rychle napravila a geriatrie zůstává zachována jako základní obor, navíc vznikl ještě nástavbový obor medicína dlouhodobé péče. Autorky připomínají, že geriatrie v České republice (respektive Československu) navazuje na události v tomto oboru, které svým významem přesahují hranice naší země a jsou prioritou mající mezinárodní, žel dosud nedoceněný význam.

In this paper, the authors review the history of Geriatrics in the Czech Republic and reflect on the last year's developments. Geariatrics were not included in the list of the main speciality areas at the beginning of 2009. Fortunately, this situation has quickly been corrected and Geriatrics remains one of the main specialty areas of medicine. In addition, 'Long-term Care Medicine' has been established as a postgradual specialisation. The authors remind the readership that Czech (and Czechoslovak, respectively) Geriatrics have been concerned with issues the importance of which goes beyond the boundaries of the country and that are among the priorities of an international, though so far undervalued significance.
