V pracovních postupech radioterapie se neustále využívají nové techniky, které zvyšují nároky na informační toky a integraci veškerých nutných informací. Tyto postupy jsou multidimenzionální a zahrnují široké spektrum dokumentů (demografické údaje pacienta, data o radioterapii, diagnostické informace nutné pro stanovení postupu léčby, obrazovou dokumentaci atd.). Data jsou nezbytně nutná pro průběh léčby pacienta a je potřebné zajistit jejich integraci se zdravotní dokumentací pacienta. Dále musejí zajistit ošetřujícímu personálu trvalý a rychlý přístup k potřebným údajům. Vzhledem k různým požadavkům na systémy a jejich různorodé využití je nevyhnutelné použití komunikačních standardů (DICOM, DICOM RT, PACS, HL7) tak, aby byla zajištěna kompatibilita a vzájemná komunikace systémů.
