Už v devadesátých letech 20. století se začaly objevovat názory, že na vzniku a rozvoji aterosklerotického procesu se výrazně podílejí imunologické faktory. V roce 2001 pořádala Evropská společnost pro aterosklerózu v Ženevě sympozium s názvem „Imunitní systém v ateroskleróze“. Přes 200 vědeckých pracovníků a klinických specialistů zde předneslo nová data, která svědčila pro významný podíl imunologických faktorů na rozvoji aterosklerotických procesů. Podle současných názorů představují arterie terciární lymfoidní orgán (artery tertiary lymphoid organ – ATLO) s variabilní buněčnou strukturou produkující řadu imunokompetentních faktorů, které přímo i nepřímo průběh onemocnění ovlivňují. Smyslem tohoto sdělení je snaha přispět k současnému pohledu na komplexní úlohu ATLO při vzniku a rozvoji aterosklerózy.
