Tuberkulóza je stará ako ľudstvo samo. Prvé správy o tuberkulóze pochádzajú z čias, keď ľudia začali vytvárať väčšie sociálne celky. Nálezy kostier z mladšej doby kamennej potvrdzujú existenciu kostnej formy tuberkulózy. Už Avicenna konštatoval, že choroba je prenosná a na jej rozvoj vplýva externé prostredie. Tuberkulóza je liečiteľné ochorenie, ale ak sa na chorobu nemyslí a pacienti prídu neskoro s ťažkými postihnutiami pľúc alebo iných orgánov, môžu aj zomrieť. Postihnutie nervového systému nie je časté, ale o to zložitejšia je tak diagnostika, ako aj liečba. Choroba patrí podobne ako chrípka medzi kvapôčkové nákazy. Je liečiteľná, aj keď narastá počet tzv. multirezistentných foriem, ktoré sú veľmi problematické. Súčasné povedomie ľudí o tuberkulóze je veľmi nízke, je o nej stále potrebné hovoriť medzi odbornou aj laickou verejnosťou, pretože môže zasiahnuť kohokoľvek a kedykoľvek.

Tuberculosis is as old as mankind itself. The first reports of tuberculosis come from the time when people began to create more social units. The findings of skeletons from the Neolithic confirm the existence of forms of bone tuberculosis. Already Avicenna noted that the disease is contagious and affects the development of the external environment. Tuberculosis is a treatable disease, but if we do not think about the disease so it is hardly to notice it, the patients are coming late with severely affected lungs or other organs, they may also die. The impairment of the nervous system is not common, but it is very difficult to do the right diagnosis and treatment. The disease is similar to the flu droplet infection. It is treatable, although a growing number of so-called multi-resistant forms, which are very troublesome. The current people's awareness of tuberculosis is very low therefore it must be constantly on call between professional and public because it can affect anyone and at any time.
