Benign hyperplasia of the prostate is an urgent problem in the male population of advanced age groups. During the last decade many efforts were devoted to the pharmacological solution of this problem. In this country drugs are used from the group of alphai sympatholytics (alphuzosine, tamsulosine, doxazosine), the antiandrogen finasteride, plant extracts fi-om Serenoa repens or Pygeum africanum and the polyenic antibiotic mepartricin. With regard to new findings on the etiopathogenesis of BPH and mechanisms of action of some drugs pharmacotherapy shoul ge considered not only with regard to the effect on BPH but also with regard to undesirable effects and the patients' quality of life.
